Hayley Kiyoko and Janelle Monaé were in the game years before Chappel Roan, but we all know why they don't count.

... is what I would say if I were interested in reverse-Uno-ing SJ digs of that sort.

Rina Sawayama as well but she lucky to even get a mention.

I love Rina Sawayama, she's fantastic.

Can I give a shout out to the fake lesbians whose songs I loved !now and as a child) anyway known as t.a.t.u.? Syd (from The Internet, love her and her jams) and Tegan & Sarah.

Don't count as what? They were both extremely popular back when they were newer and not past their heyday. In fact I would venture to say more popular, since I actually heard of them in the media and I had never heard of whoever the hell this secret is about until... this secret.

First white American?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, she's the first white American lesbian popstar in a while

...

If ever..?

The other thing, is that's she's unapologetically queer. She does the yous, theys and thems, but she's also pretty openingky doing shes and hers and being explicit about it.

I'm not saying the others aren't, but there's always going to be a certain kind of aura around a white American popstar doing something over a British, black or Asian popstar.

It's one of the reasons why Gaylor's are such a huge thing - they don't just want to stan a queer popstar, they want to stan a pretty, white, queer, traditionally feminine popstar who's at the top of the game.
