Snacks

What are your favorite snacks and why?

Fruit, yoghurt, popcorn.

Popcorn is my favorite salty thing. And fruit and yoghurt are my compromise with my need for sweet but trying to eat more healthy these days.

I am beholden to the power of cheese.

Mmmmm, cheese. That used to be a go-to for me.

Cheese, because well, it's tasty and goes so well with crackers, slices of apple, grapes, cherry tomatoes, etc. And cool ranch Doritos which are addictively more-ish, but I've cut those out of my diet for health reasons.

If I've got more time to prepare, I love this roasted eggplant/pepper spread on multigrain toast:

Dried shredded squid (lol), carrot sticks, dried mango and apples, cucumbers. Anything crunchy

I like a scotch egg, or a nice macaroni pie myself.

I hate being stereotypical about being Scottish, but any snack food that can be deep fried is a good food.

Who is the greatest actor of our age?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I'm coming up blank, can't even think of a decent candidate. But do you have someone you think would be a candidate for "greatest actor of our age"? And which role(s) convinces you of their greatness?

So, Gary Oldman, Tilda Swinton, Michael Cranston, Sam Rockwell, Daniel Day Lewis, and Cate Blanchett come to mind as actors with roles that are extremely varied but where they fully become each character.

I think it depends on how you define "our age"?

Some people here are old enough to be my parents and some people here are young enough to be my nieces/nephews, lol.

Jack Black. Without a doubt. I knew once I saw Jumanji and didn't doubt for a second that he was a teenaged girl.

Jared Harris and Jeremy Strong are two big contenders, IMO.

Robin Williams, Maggie Smith, Ian McKellan are some names that come to mind

I haven't been into films and TV shows (much less theatre) so my guesses are probably not the best.

I would say Bryan Cranston is close to hitting the mark.

He's worked in the industry for a long time. He has been insanely successful in both comedy and drama. He's garnered a lot of critical acclaim as well as is an audience darling.
Projects he's worked on are interesting. He's not above doing commercial work when selecting projects.
I believe he has directly and indirectly influenced many actors and will continue to do so for who knows how long.

Similarly, Viola Davis is also a well regarded actor with a good resume.

I also feel like they're actors who really get into their roles but aren't weirdly annoying about it (looking at you Leonardo Dicaprio - I have issues with him as a Hollywood actor too).

Fuck Texas (and the other states involved in the lawsuit too) for wasting their time on this rather than actually doing things to help their people. Fuck the stupid judge who has now granted their injunction for at least two weeks. Just generally, Fuck.

LotR Maps

(Anonymous) 2024-08-27 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Are there any detailed maps for Middle Earth that are generally considered the most accurate to the books? I’m still in The Shire so that’s what I’m looking for most immediately but would love to see them all.

I found this (I think well known?) map but the Reddit thread had comments about it being pretty inaccurate due to proportions but also placement and missing a river (River Norbourn).

I think the ones in "The Journeys of Frodo" are pretty accurate. But those are in book form, not poster form.

...sorry, they only cover the actual route.

Karen Wynn Fonstad's Atlas of Middle Earth was basically a professional cartographer reworking Tolkien's maps and adding more demographic details.

Good lucking fuck finding a copy at a reasonable price, though... (I don't have mine any more as at some point I just moved away from a youthful 80s obsession with Tolkien and decided to free up shelf space)
