It boils down to people wanting to be right and like the 'correct' (ie: canon) thing, it used to not even be a pipe dream some 20 years ago because canon gay characters were few and far between, never mind a consistent gay romance in a show, but because there's more queer rep in general it's warped a subset of fans perception into believing that their fave non-canon ships are somehow going to sail despite their shows not even slightly hinting at it because being 'right' is more important than just having fun.

And man does is suck the enjoyment out of fandom tbh.

Or they just really like the ship and actually believe that it could be canon because it is no longer just a pipe dream that m/m ships could ever be canon.

Most people just want to have fun in fandom. I don't know why this comm is so hellbent on assigning them selfish motives.

When those same people scream and harass other fans who like a different ship it's not about having fun, it's about being right and being able to tell other fans they're wrong. If they were chill about it I wouldn't care, but they're so often not. So yeah, they're selfish bullies.

idk man it's not really fun to try and ship something when a lot of other fans are srsly huffing some delusion and trying to convince the rest of the fandom that a pair of friends written as friends are totes gonna be paired off at some point. it takes otherwise relaxed fandoms and turns them into a mess of expectations and when those expectations aren't met? fuck me does it get nasty.

DA

I think if we're talking about people who have their slash goggles on too tight then it implies they expect or believe it to be canon. As opposed to people who merely ship it and would like if it were to happen but aren't making any demands or judging the writers for *not* having it happen.

The implication of slash goggles is that they can be put on and taken off at will, but OP's point seems to be that some parts of fandom have forgotten how to take them off.

I get annoyed when a particular faction starts to act as though they are somehow uniquely entitled to have their ship made canon, especially when they insist that it's the best because it's the Most Progressive or some such shit.

You say this like we don’t live in the era of people sending death threats and harassment to the writers and creators of TV shows because their pet ship wasn’t canon.
