I feel like there's a middle/third option between "obviously they're straight but this is fun" and "I think this could/should actually be canon" that's like

"I recognize that the writers don't intend this to be sexual and it will never be canon, but they've made this relationship so intense and pivotal to the whole story that in fact it does make more sense and is more compelling if I read it that way, and you don't need to go into the story looking for m/m to get that impression"

with the caveat that people who DO have their slash goggles on tight may often mistake the first thing for the third thing

Agreed, honestly. I can think of a whole bunch of ships that would fall into that category.
