Agreed.

My personal theory is that when nerd culture became more mainstream and there were more situations where creators/actors engaged with the fandom, the blur between fan service and creators' ideas/preferences became more difficult to decipher. From both the fans and the creators.
Therefore, fans have expectations that likely will never be met and instead of understanding that fans won't always get what they want, they get angry.
And creators may find themselves with this issue of the fans have theories/ships that are popular but the creators don't have plans to integrate fan theories into their project, so they face all sorts of backlash for not doing what the fans want/expect.

Like, a lot of issues with fandom/the entertainment industry IMO are made worse due to the ease of access between fans and creators/entertainers, not just the whole slash goggles vs slash is canon thing.
