Would you recommend Stranger Things?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-31 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
I like the look of Jamie Campbell Bower, and heard that he expressed enthusiasm for playing villains, and I'm finding that rather appealing. But I wanted to know what people here think of it as a show. Has season 4 been interesting? Can someone jump in with the wikipedia description in hand and not be completely lost? Does this show have a pattern of offing its most onscreen villain and replacing them with a new guy each season, or can I expect them to keep Vecna for a while? I'd be glad if people would relay their general impressions.

I enjoyed season 1, but IMO each following season has been less impressive. It's not that they suck, and every season has its high points. I'm just not that into it anymore. I think the novelty of seeing something that really nailed the whole 80s feel (in season one) kinda wore off. I also don't care about the various romances in there, it feels like filler. I haven't seen season 4, however.

I see. And yeah, I can relate. The chances of me being interested in which protagonists smooch are pretty low. Villain-fan here.

S4 not great. Too elongated. Splits up the gang across the country.

S1, unequivocally yes, it's nearly perfect, and just a hell of a good time. Everything after that? Meh. It doesn't get full-on bad per se, but it never recaptures the magic of S1, and IMO it slowly squanders the the audience devotion it earner in S1.

It's basically one superb season followed by a very long coast through several seasons of mediocrity.

Okay. Good to know.

Other people have already explained the downward trajectory in general quality, so I'll just jump in to mention the villain thing.

Vecna is only the villain in season 4, where we find out he's been behind everything from the start (personally I found this development disappointing because I liked the idea of a completely alien consciousness being the villain). They don't kill off previous villains, though--the monsters just steadily escalate throughout the seasons, which I do like.

Oh, thanks for this. They did his makeup like a character from some Halloween themed slasher movie, in his current form. I'm wondering if he ... has much personality or character development, or outside of the flashbacks they're mostly writing him as a non-intellectual monster. But your saying he's filling the role of "mastermind" kind of makes me hope.

Personally I think he has more personality in the monster makeup! It's kind of a "before and after" situation, and "after" is definitely where he's going above and beyond.

That's great to know. :)

People are too harsh on the later seasons IMO. S2 isn't great but S3 and S4 are fine.

I hear you. But I was asking what people think of it. I don't mind their telling me that, specifically.
