What are some of your favorite fic tropes? Especially new ones?

I'm pretty set in my ways so no new tropes. I like Monster and the Maiden and Odd friendship.

Heroic sacrifice. Either the hero sacrificing himself for the world or the minor heroes sacrificing themselves so the big hero can save the day. Either way. Especially if the sacrifice isn't death but instead is trauma that needs healing later.

Female action heroes.

Villains who love other villains but who are still both fully evil.

Villains who just straight up enjoy their villainy.

Any time a traditional trope is gender-reversed, I'll probably be interested.

Otherwise, de-aging, found family, and "character who tries to act super stoic but is actually falling apart."

Strong girls protecting weak boys, enemies to lovers, and only one bed. Lately I’ve been into queerplatonic relationships, but I haven’t had much luck finding content with that trope.

I've been reading a story online with a pragmatic villain who cordially befriended the protagonist early on, and it's been really fun watching the main character sort of ... have to adjust to the fact that this guy sailed past his "be on the lookout for Bad People" defenses, and now he likes him too much to exile him into that mental category. It's been a little awkward on both sides, but so amusing and endearing. I'm hoping their friendship continues and grows.

This is going to sound dopey, but I was charmed by the scene in Frozen where the reindeer-herder was feeling all superior to the snowman, who's too inexperienced to know summer could kill him, but the fact that it's so earnest about its dream just completely changes his attitude to being worried and empathizing. I didn't get to watch the movie in theaters, but I could just picture the audience laughing at the part where the guy's like "someone has to tell him!!" with this ... stricken look on his face. It just seemed so harmless and wholesome and emotionally self-aware, in a way that I haven't seen Disney be in so long. From Aladdin on, their sense of humor got crass and mean. So this really surprised me.

If I knew how to condense that idea into a trope, I would have. But it's something to do with how the one character watched the other being vulnerable and silly, and responded with protectiveness instead of his original disdain.

What is everyone doing this (Labor Day) weekend?

I'm not really doing anything but enjoying the break in terrible heat. We are going to be in the 80s! So I'll be able to take some walks. Will also be crocheting and playing video games.

I have been sick and suuuuper Depressed, which means I have been shit at planning ahead and too worn out to do anything. I normally go camping, but sadly not this year. Looks like I'll just be lounging around home.

well, plan was art museum tomorrow. But now I've got some sort of bug. Not covid, but I'm thinking flu since I do have temp.

So now plans are sleep. And kitty time. Watching first 3 season 2 Rings of Power episodes. And then either Babylon 5, Supernatural, or White Collar season 1.

Coming home (tomorrow) from my week at the seaside. It's been lovely!
Then i have Sunday off to regroup, do laundry, all that, and then Monday I work a 16 hour shift. Whoo!

I’m assembling a wardrobe and playing with the new food dehydrator. I’m also sketching the plan for Halloween decorations because I always do an OTT setup and then add more the next year. This year I have a lot more to add than usual and the temptation to just start setting all up on September 1st instead of October 1st is strong!

What's disappointed you recently?

So, I was planning on going on a trip to Seattle at the end of September. My BIL was going to a conference so my sister and I were tagging along. Meant a free (nice) hotel and all that. He decided to change jobs so now we won't be doing that. It sucks but hopefully we can plan a trip elsewhere.

Oh I've had a similar thing happen before and it is so disappointing.

For me, I have just generally been disappointed in myself lately. I am letting depression and negative mindset win and I thought I was better than this. Gotta find my magical motivation and make some changes, but so far no luck.

A depressing amount of shows I've tried to watch. Can't even name them all. Most of them recommended by friends who have posted about being tired of shows about assholes being assholes because it stopped being funny ages ago and can we have some nice protags for a change (something I also feel)... and then the new shows they recommended to me are all about assholes being assholes.

Johnny Gaudreau was killed in an accident

For those who don't know, he was a hockey player, playing most recently for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

He and his brother were in New Jersey for their sister's wedding, and were going to be groomsmen. They went for a bike ride. A drunk driver struck and killed them both.

They both leave behind wives and children.

I'm not a Blue Jackets fan, and obviously knew of Gaudreau, but didn't follow his career very closely. But this is horrible. My gods, his poor family. To lose two people like that, at once, in such an awful manner. Their kids! Their sister, that poor woman.

This is one of those stories that just really makes you want to go hug all your loved ones.

Would you recommend Stranger Things?

I like the look of Jamie Campbell Bower, and heard that he expressed enthusiasm for playing villains, and I'm finding that rather appealing. But I wanted to know what people here think of it as a show. Has season 4 been interesting? Can someone jump in with the wikipedia description in hand and not be completely lost? Does this show have a pattern of offing its most onscreen villain and replacing them with a new guy each season, or can I expect them to keep Vecna for a while? I'd be glad if people would relay their general impressions.
