So, I was planning on going on a trip to Seattle at the end of September. My BIL was going to a conference so my sister and I were tagging along. Meant a free (nice) hotel and all that. He decided to change jobs so now we won't be doing that. It sucks but hopefully we can plan a trip elsewhere.

Oh I've had a similar thing happen before and it is so disappointing.

For me, I have just generally been disappointed in myself lately. I am letting depression and negative mindset win and I thought I was better than this. Gotta find my magical motivation and make some changes, but so far no luck.

A depressing amount of shows I've tried to watch. Can't even name them all. Most of them recommended by friends who have posted about being tired of shows about assholes being assholes because it stopped being funny ages ago and can we have some nice protags for a change (something I also feel)... and then the new shows they recommended to me are all about assholes being assholes.

Are you sure you don't need to watch a few episodes? Maybe even skip a season? Some shows start off as very assholes being assholes, but aren't that way after a while.

I generally agree, though.

I'm holding onto that hope with a few of the shows where that seems like more of a possibility than others. But I'm also not holding my breath. My friends could just be doing the rec thing where someone says "This has the exact thing you said you didn't want, but this one's different, I swear you'll like it [read: because I like it]"

This is basically a Fandom Secret not worthy of escaping the comments section, LOL.

I watched "The Whale" last weekend and felt it did NOT deserve all the hype. Yeah I'm happy for Brendan Fraser that he got some critical acclaim and fancy awards out of it, but the characters were unlikable, (not in an entertaining way), the dialogue was trite, the symbolism was ham-handed, and during what were supposed to be the most dramatic moments, the acting was hysterical and a mile over the top.

I feel kinda guilty for my reaction, but I was expecting more. Maybe it worked better as a stage play. /shrug

I haven’t watched it because friends who generally like the same things I do said pretty much the same thing you did. But I also kinda expect any movie that gets tons of award buzz to be overblown or just not my vibe.

Yeah, it sounded unwatchable to me, though I am happy for him as well. I just can't help but wish his big comeback and deserved acclaim had come over something... enjoyable?

I watched it last week too and it wasn't as great as everybody said it was. Same reaction as you: happy for Brendan Fraser and all that; welcome back to the forefront, Brendan.

I'm happy for Brendan Fraser, but it didn't look like my cup of tea and I wasn't ever going to watch it. That said, it's fairly common for actors to get major kudos for roles where they deviate from the usual Hollywood standard of beauty. It's like my gosh, you were sooooo brave and talented to dare to look fugly on the big screen, good for you!

Pretty sure I know who this is, and anon, this isn't healthy. It's really, really easy to get caught up in the "what might have been" and paint those possibilities in glowing, rosy colors, but that's usually fantasy and wish fulfillment talking. Don't obsess over The One Who Got Away, you'll just make yourself unhappy and stagnate your life over nothing.

Folks, just because you suspect something, and you might be right, doesn't mean you have to respond. I had my suspicions too, but they made it clear they aren't interested in listening to anyone who doesn't enable them. Frankly, next time, I'd just report the post because at this point, it's no better than a troll.

Touring musical I'm dying to see is coming to a town... not unreasonably far from me-- I've been there before for a show! But I won't be able to make this one, just the way the timing is working out and my own ability to travel that time of year. It's something that's really special to me and I'm just still grappling with the disappointment that I'm not in a place go get to see it even when it's coming this close to me.

As a huge theater fan, I really feel this one. I hope you get another chance soon!

My general inability to find something to connect to, or people to connect with.

because I had to have major surgery on my leg and the hospital I went to was great but they didn't do rehab on leg surgery there so because I live alone and I do not expect my friends to walk away from their jobs for two weeks, move in with me and help me get back in bed after I go to the toilet, I had to go to a nursing facility which SUCKED.

Does your insurance offer part-time home care with an aide?

Didn't get a (nice) job I applied for

Got called "fucking stupid" and "robot" and told "there's something wrong with you" by a customer yesterday.

*Sigh* Yeah do I need to get tested for autism, thanks for noticing, asshole.

(Sometimes I shut down when I'm really freaked out and get really wooden and to the point where I can only ask/say a couple stock customer service things because the alternative is full meltdown where "done with this shit" me bursts out of customer-service-drone me like a facehugger and beats the shit out of shitheads while screaming obscenities and/or shuts myself in a dark room to stim by flapping my arms at my sides.)

Dude was also obviously some flavor of mentally ill and also also big into Jesus which did not help, and I hope he doesn't show up at my work ever again.

The public is so sucky to customer service workers.
