Yeeeah. I really liked Kinich until his 8-bit sidekick showed up. They'll have to do something really cool with him now to make me pull for him but I'd rather save my primos for Mavuika.

Yeah exactly. I like his design otherwise but the fact that I'll have this crappy little 8bit-shit hovering around while playing makes me want to skip him.

I like Ajaw and find his voicelines both galling and hilarious, but I definitely can see why people would hate him. My TL see s pretty divided on him.
I will say though that it was pretty daring to put a mean as fuck sidekick on a 5 star character... but then again Ajaw (and potentially smoother grappling) are the only reasons I would ever pull for Kinich.

I don't really care about his personality (I think mean characters can be kinda hilarious if played well) and so far, the CN voice is not as grating as I'd feared. For me, it's almost 100% the design. That weird 2D 8bit pixel graphic clashes with the game so badly, and not even in a quirky/interesting way - it just looks so incredibly out of place and awful, dumb "emotes" and all.

DA, but he's hurting my brother's eyes with how badly he clashes with the rest of the game's art. And was from the very beginning, and I don't think we'll get used to it. I think Ajaw's visual design is awful too, but I'm used to feeling like I'm a lot more artistically picky than most people.

(The women in Genshin look deformed to me with their severe, turned-inwards-from-the-hips feet.)

Yeah, not gonna lie, it really bothers me how much it clashes. I think it because it's so completely 2D and just... where does this whole 8bit pixel thing even come from? It's not like there are gaming consoles or something.

A lot of the character designs in general are pretty overdesigned and also fairly unbalanced (a lot of them are so incredibly top-heavy). I also hate how the different size character models have all such vastly different head sizes - like, the kids aside, even the medium sized character models have much bigger heads than the tall models and it just looks weird. Also how super alien the small character models look next to NPC child models. It's creepy.
I enjoy playing the game but a lot of design decisions are pretty sketchy, imo.

Yeah...I can give Genshin a pass on some things being a little "digital" looking, especially when it comes to dendro for Lore Reasons^TM (see: Nahida, see: Kaveh, see: Alhaitham) but they took it too far with Ajaw and I find it really hard to see what purpose it serves. Sure...give Kinich a sidekick, it could even still be the same exact sidekick just...back away from the 2D design.

All true. I'm kinda inured to the kids having watermelons for heads because I grew up with Charlie Brown and similar levels of cartoon misproportion. But the difference between characters and NPCs is pretty stark.

I'm mostly focusing on how badly I want sketchy-glasses-guy in the Kinich arc to be Enjou. Characters I really like in Genshin are few and far between, and we generally wind up fighting them.

But yeah - Ajaw is hideous. I'm hoping he has wittier lines in Chinese, and the translators just dropped the ball hard, but the English version just makes him sound like a cheap knock-off of Disney's Iago. The one thing I'm enjoying about him is how mad he makes Paimon. Because I like the traveler's familiar even less than this little twit.

I dislike Paimon as well. She's not anywhere near as bad in CN voice as this atrocious screetchy mess in EN but I dislike her attitude and how she's the reason the Travellers barely speak themselves.
Not sure about the CN lines for Ajaw being better though because I don't speak Chinese and the English text tends to be dubtitles rather than actual translations/the English translations for the game tend to be pretty lacking from what I've seen CN native speakers report. He doesn't sound nearly as bad but that's about the most positive thing I can say about it.

AYRT Yeah, I can't know either. I can just easily imagine Ajaw's lines sucking less in the language he was originally written in, and I know from experience translating between other languages that I do speak that getting a character's sense of humor across accurately, especially when it's underhanded and mean, can take a lot more time and effort to get right than when they're presenting themselves in a more straightforward way.

I only just started the chronicle quest and I'm pretty sure it's Enjou, haha. He's great, shame some of the best writing is typically for NPCs (e.g.: Jeht).
