Conventions and MeetUp groups are out there! But I get what you're saying.

I was gonna say, I've been doing fandom offline since the 90s thanks to conventions.

Would love to go to an adults only anime club - not necessarily show only 'adult' anime but a variety of new and old. I miss the one I went to years ago at college because not only did we watch anime, but there were organized trips to bars and comic stores or discussions/how to draw/other activities.

I found Hadestown and Pokémon fans at my recent job because I talked about or had references to both on my desk. They're out there.

Heck, I found out that one of my old bosses used to write fanfic!

One of my coworkers asked me out of the blue "hey, do you like Steven Universe? Because you seem like a person who might like Steven Universe" and I had to say that in theory I would be a person who liked Steven Universe but it was a video based fandom and I have a hard time with those.

Later I gave her my real name, the one I use on the internet.

Conventions, meet ups, game nights, movie screenings, even just talking about it at work casually - I make friends everywhere since I've always got something fannish on me like my bags. You'd be really surprised at how many people are down to talk about your faves! I hope you're able to find your community irl soon, friend.

Well, there are cons for IRL fandom spaces, but sometimes you can make fandom friends in unexpected places. I’ve made fandom friends at cons, but also at concerts and work assignments. I talk more about fandom offline than online because me and all my friends are fandom-y people.

I mean, be careful what you wish for. Offline fandoms (conventions, gaming groups, etc) are just as full of drama as online. I've finally returned to the con scene post-pandemic and forgot just how much fanthings can annoy the absolute shit out of you, wanting to get into half-hour discussions of their husbandos with complete strangers.

I did fandom offline before there was fandom online and I do not miss it. But there's plenty of it out there.

I agree with this, but mainly I just wish I could talk about fanfic with my RL friends.

I mean, I have zero shame, so I actually DO talk about fanfic with my RL non-fandom friends, but I tend to keep things fairly vague. I might mention a fic in a conversation about fiction in general. I might bring up a common fanfic trope in a conversation about fictional tropes. If we both enjoy a particular canon, I might mention a bit of fanon about a particular character, and whether I ascribe to it or don't. I might tall them about a crack fic I read and we'll have a laugh about it. My friends are all geeks too, and I listen to them talk about their geek things, so I don't feel bad bringing up my geek things. But I'd love to be able to actually discuss specific fics, and specific fanon things, and specific fanfic tropes at length with friends who are actually into those things the same way I am.

I did have a RL fandom friend once, and it was really fun to be able to talk about that stuff with her. Unfortunately, we fell out eventually, and I haven't made any more RL fandom friends since then.

Get you a fandom friend or three to do a regular real time voice chat about fandom and stuff, and see where it goes.

This afternoon I was on the actual phone with a friend I made in the late 90s over a book fandom and then she had a long commute and free long distance on her cellphone while I didn't have a job, and then I had a long commute and free long distance to anyone with the same cellphone company while she didn't have a job and we just spent about three hours this afternoon cackling over amazingly bad fic and also over exactly how I'm planning to stuff Halloween up my boyfriend's nose over the next month, it was amazing

and then I got off the phone because it was time to fix dinner, in my boyfriend's place which has fandom art all over the walls bc I met him on the internet too, and our roommate who is also from fandom was able to join us today.

People from fandom have the same amount of drama as people who aren't from fandom; the pro is that they may share your interests. The con is if you have a bad friend/roommate/romantic breakup you may also have to part ways online which can suck if you are the one who does not get the best Discord in the breakup
