Wangxian, I found WWX to be ungodly annoying and I didn't find their relationship compelling at all, it felt quite empty to me as LWJ barely had a personality.

Buddie, the shippers have always been half annoying but they got even worse last season to the point where I now dislike the ship.

I don't even watch the show and can't stand Buddie because the way it inundated my feed when the one guy got into a relationship with someone else.

It’s so hard to avoid if you’re in the fandom at all, I’m into Maddie/Chim and Hen/Karen and finding anything just for them is like pulling teeth. Buck being bi was fine for about a week then when it was clear Tommy wasn’t going to be leaving by the seasons end they got fucking nasty, a fandom friend of mine has had to take a long break from fandom because some of the shippers invaded her inbox for weeks until she turned it off because she liked the new ship. Fucking madness.

Yeah, I was getting Klance vibes from Buddie fans when it started. I actually hoped Tommy would stick around because I knew it would piss them off.

Okay, more Wangxian for me!

Enjoy them anon, my dislike doesn't mean others can't like them.

I look fondly upon Wangxian, but not really into shipping it myself. LWJ doesn't have a very prominent personality, especially not compared to WWX who takes center stage in both the novel and the live action adaptation. LWJ's personality is more... knowledge of what he does and why he does it, along with his background. I wouldn't find his character nearly as compelling without having watched The Untamed, because he never says much. But I can't NOT be touched at the idea of him playing Inquiry for 10+ years, hoping and waiting against hope for someone he loved.

I'd find it romantic if I felt like LWJ actually knew who WWX was, it seemed like he was more in love with the idea of WWX than who he was as a person. Different strokes, people can be into that, I just don't get the appeal of romances where one character has all the story and the other is barely a footnote a narrative.

Yeah, WWX was basically LJW's manic pixie dreamboy. While LJW was the "I'm pulling you pigtails" boy for WWX.

I actually quite like WWX, which is the main reason I dislike wangxian. I just find WWX to be extermely shippable, with a good number of options ranging from cute to problematic. But the fandom is overrun by the most uncompelling option possible. Doesn't help that I find LWJ to be an annoying designated hero.

LWJ isn't the hero, he's the love interest.

It's a trope. A character doesn't have to be the main hero for it to apply, as long as they fit the criteria.

I find wwx both aggravating AND really interesting as a grey protagonist, but I can't stand LWJ and their relationship reads SO hollow to me. (tbf, I'm a novel main, I know CQL did a LITTLE more work for it, but still. the 'this is obviously the author's fantasy' #vibes of the Perfect Stoic Top who never ever ever says no to you and hates all your friends is both very much not my kink, but also makes me feel like WWX is gonna wake up one day realizing that the man who supposedly loves him doesn't see him at all, just worships an empty cipher of "Wei Ying is good" and feel so fucking desperately lonely in his own marriage. All the 'every day is every day' stuff feels to me like a subconscious attempt to distract and delay that day. WWX can't face complicated or painful emotions, so he can't let himself have a relationship with anyone who sees him as a real comeplete person. It's not a romance, it's a fucking tragedy!

And I know how the wangxian relationship is SUPPOSED to work thematically, in terms of rest and acceptance and miracle second chances and adhd/autism solidarity and all the rest of it, but I just. don't. BUY IT.

Also LWJ is a hugely self-absorbed spoiled self-righteous trust fund baby asshole who bullies children that annoy him and who actually thinks being too autistic to be polite is the same as being better than everyone else who is 'so fake'. He's an immature hypocrite of the highest order and I genuinely despise him.

I'd possibly dislike LWJ too if I felt like the guy had a personality instead of being the designated dommy-top that fucks WWX to tears every night. As it is I just find him boring while WWX is an irritating knobhead who makes the same mistakes over and over. I loose patience with that shit very fast.

Eh, I like WWX and LWJ well enough as the established main pairing because I think they deserve each other - they're about equally bland as cardboard cutout protagonist archetypes, just for two very very different archetypes. But I find most characters in MDZS more interesting than either of them.
My petty disliked ship in this fandom is XiCheng because I don't see the appeal (they barely ever spoke in canon), because a lot of the shippers are plain annoying and because it includes one character I prefer with another character in my actual OTP.

I will agree with you that Xicheng makes absolutely no sense and it's popularity is beyond baffling given that their canon interactions aren't even interesting along with being sparse. If they were riddled with tension when they meet I'd get the appeal, but they're barely interested in each other co-workers at best, where is the spice?

I chalk it up to Jiang Cheng fans needing to one up WWX in favor of their fave. Oh, WWX bagged a Lan sect heir? JC bagged the actual sect leader!! So there!!

Doesn't seem to matter that it makes no sense thematically or politically and you have to radically change one or both of their personalities.

I don't think there even was any tension, not that I can remember, anyway. It's just... nothing. Like, I get it, they're both basically the foils to their respective brothers and I can see why people would want to do the whole "pair the spares" with the brothers of the main ship but the massive popularity confuses me.

Wow, all you guys above missed or glossed over so much of LWJ's characterization. I feel sorry for you.

You don't need to feel sorry for me, I'm perfectly happy not caring about a bland and boring character that doesn't exist beyond being WWX's dom-top.

Like I said, you missed a bunch of characterization. I can't help but feel sorry for you.
