Yeah, that was my other issue that I've had with TV Tropes for ages. IME, the fic recs are just not very good. Sure, they'll manage to rec the occasional good one, but a significant number of the recs for my fandom are real head-scratchers as to why anyone would nominate them. Either the person doing it has terrible taste, or they're reccing friends' fics or something, who knows.

Yeah I've always been equally baffled and annoyed by the fans interpretation of this character. He is a goof con artist who thinks he is cool but really just a disaster. A loveable disaster, but a disaster all the same.

Standard 'make every other guy look weird in comparison to the brown haired brown eyed generic ass human MC so the teen boy viewer can use him as a stand-in to fap to kemonomimi girls' anime stuff.

I mean why would the girls settle for a generic ass human boy(who's also a jerk) , when they could have a hot cat prettyboy or even a hunky wolf boy?

I think TV Tropes tries to avoid linking to fanfic on AO3 as much as possible. AO3 comes with a certain reputation, and TV Tropes only allow fanfic that doesn't have graphic sex (porn) or pairings that involve minors to be recommended on the site. AO3 has plenty of both.

Graphic violence, of course, is okay.

That's not to say TV Tropes doesn't link to stories on AO3, because they do, but I've noticed if another site has the fic, they'll pick something like Spacebattles or Fanfiction.net to link to instead.

Unfortunately in this type of anime they're never pointedly portrayed as pretty or hunky, because female gaze doesn't exist. So the girls are usually out of luck either way.

Yeah. I don't want to name and shame, but I've seen some fics recced that were just... so sophomorically bad, either the author is self-reccing or they have some dedicated friends with bad taste. Unfortunately, not enough of the fandom is into TV Tropes where they show up and go, "Hey, WTF?"
