Do any of you think certain segments of society are doubling down on shaming people who don't want heterosexual marriage with children for some... ulterior motive?

Especially women, though it's not completely limited to them.

Between J. D. Vance yapping about childless cat ladies, Harrison Butker telling a whole class of women that their marriage and children will be more important than any other accomplishments, and assloads of online comments that imply that NOT being married and having kids is the ultimate failure for a woman (along with being a single mom, of course!). And I swear people are getting more homophobic again (not that it ever went away, but I see it so often now).

Yeah this has been growing for several years now. The conservative religious right is making a lot of progress, sadly.

Though to be perfectly honest I'm not sure if the percentage of people who believe this have grown or if the people who have always believed this stuff have just gotten louder and more secure in speaking up and pushing their agenda openly in the mainstream.

I don't think they're making progress. I think they're making NOISE.

Every country where women are self-actualized and have choices results in a lower birth rate. Women have mostly never wanted to have 3-4 kids but didn't have the option not to.

Most of the decline in the US birth rate? Fewer teen pregnancies. Really!

Guess they're gonna have to figure it out with things like immigration/consolidating people into countries with less negative climate effects or whatever.

I would say it's probably the latter. Childless cat ladies have always been the butt of the joke. It's just that people stopped joking.

I don't think there is more of it, just Trump and Republicans have emboldened people to be more open about it. Plus Covid just...broke some people's brains.

Gotta have more kids to become wage slaves to be crushed in the gears of industry to make money for the rich. Can't do that if women are all uppity and insisting on controlling their own bodies.

The ironic part is usually these are the same people crying and wringing their hands over things "for the sake of the children."

People who don't want kids should not be having kids, for the sake of the children. No child should be unwanted.

I mean, there's a ton of things they could be doing to encourage people to have more wanted kids! Healthcare for starters (both for parents and children). Maternity leave. Improved schools. Free childcare. Keeping home prices down so people can afford kids.

But you can see very clearly it's all about controlling women, not about caring for children.

I don't argue with disingenuous assholes anymore. If they don't even believe what they're arguing, they can get fucked. And if they're just here to take away my rights, they don't deserve my respect and can REALLY get fucked.

I've literally seen people argue against childless adults by calling them selfish narcissists.

Obviously I don't agree with that, but pretending it's true for the sake of the argument: does anyone think a selfish narcissist would make a good parent?

I think that a lot of people are getting louder about their existing beliefs, and I think there is a process of ideological radicalization going on - in other words, things that were previously inchoate prejudices and emotional feelings have been turned into conscious ideological beliefs.

At the end of the day, these peoples' core value is for a rigidly hierarchical, caste-based society with them on the upper rungs. As social liberalism around women and LGBTQ people (in particular) has increased, they've become more and more at odds with American culture and society, and they've grown more conscious of how desperately at odds their desires are with American culture and society. And so they are more and more open at directing invective at women and minorities.

As a childless cat owner they can kiss my ass.

These fuckers want to control the breeding masses, and that gets more difficult the more we refuse to conform to their antiquated vision.

I'm pretty sure it's tied into the racist Great Replacement Theory (which is part of Leon Skum's creepy breeding fetish).

I've had a couple randos do the "oh but why don't you have kids?" thing and get confused and angry when I say I would've been a bad parent (I'm white and blonde with blue-hazel eyes which in racist shithead land means I should've popped out babies from 16 onwards) and really pissed when they escalate and I say it's funny because back when my parents were young someone like me might well have been involuntarily sterilized to prevent my having children.

One of my dad's cousins underwent electroconvulsive therapy and was sterilized as a 20-something.

The priest at our local church hopped on that bandwagon, which led to my parents moaning about the fact that I'm still unmarried and that their only grandchild is my dog. And still they wonder why I don't go to church.

As a human who has no kids and who is proudly owned by a kitty who is the best thing in this world, these people are just stupid. There is nothing better than being owned by a cat.

There's a lot of the same traditional misogyny that's always been present in the conservative right, that's for sure. The people who believe that a woman's place is in the kitchen, caring for babies (yet still maintaining her youthful looks and figure) and looking the other way at whatever her man chooses to do, always being available for sex to any man who wants it, but shamed for being a slut if they appear to enjoy it, etc. etc. These people just hate women, full stop.

And at the same time, I don't think it's a coincidence that a new segment of Trump supporters are angry, neo-Nazi young men. Big overlap with the incel crowd, and guess who's very threatened by the existence of women who prefer being single and loving a cat than fucking some repugnant manbaby incel? Mind you, this idea also offends traditional misogynists as well.
