...um...
Because the idea that Rey was a nobody, nothing special, was rather novel in this series of films and for it to be retconned that she's the product of the most evillist evil mastermind, powerful last Sith lord does a disservice to the character and overall story?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-16 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it does a disservice, I think it just tells a different story. But now that I've typed that out maybe it's the same thing. Hmm.

Um I don't know Star Wars lore very well but.. didn't they DO the whole. "nobody who comes from nothing" origin story with Anakin already?

Maybe Rey can have the "hero who is descended from great evil" origin to be idk ..different?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-16 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Anakin? You mean the kid whose mother gave birth to him after getting pregnant by the force?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-16 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That they doubled down on in The Acolyte

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
da

Seriously. The Legend of Darth Plaguis The Wise that Palpatine retells to Anakin during the squid ballet is basically "my Master figured out the central secret of the force - how to CREATE LIFE - and proved it by getting a woman pregnant without doing anything except Dark Magic." Kinda already foreshadowed by the part in Phantom Menace where Qui-Gonn wants to know who Ani's father was, and Shmi tells him it was an immaculate conception, and he nods and takes that back to the temple and is like "you guys, this is THE boy from THE prophecy, who was born of the force itself!!"

Of course I'm paraphrasing a little, but not much. And the Christian right freaked the fuck out, let me tell you. Good times.

Ohhh

Wow ok. I uh don't remember that bit from the Star wars prequels I watched as a kid

Disregard then sorry!

(Anonymous) 2024-09-16 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Anakin was a virgin birth jesus character (who was probably conceived via Darth Plageius/Sidious midichlorian experiments), so no, this really doesn't apply to him.

'Maybe Rey can have the "hero who is descended from great evil" origin to be idk ..different?'

Right? Star Wars certainly never had a hero who was the descendant of an evil character before...

Oh...ohhh fuck derp on my part.

Sorry. This is why I shouldn't comment on canons I know little of.

Im so sorry i look super dumb right now xD

(Anonymous) 2024-09-16 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yyyyeah, came here to say exactly this. Like, if that had been a plot point from the beginning, sure, yeah, fine, whatever. But to specifically go back after the entire message of the second movie was that even people without connections could be chosen by the Force? It feels soooo. Handwavey. Shoe-horned. Just lazy writing.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-16 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
doubly so that it had to be Palpatine. like, sure, if you want to explore Luke Skywalker's storyline a second time, you do you, just make it not the most obviously stupid character choice. but this is the same franchise that brought back Darth Maul after he was bisected specifically to tell the fanom "sorry your fave ain't coming back" so I guess shitty choices are just par for the course.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Maul was awesome. I have more of a problem with the lack of great newer villains in Star Wars than I do with their resurrecting him and Boba Fett.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
right?? that's probably the kicker right there, that they can't come up with good new villains so they just literally bring back the old ones.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
The Stranger in Acolyte was great.

But that got cancelled so...

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It was cancelled because almost no one watched it.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

People watched it; it was constantly in the top 10 streams. The problem was that Disney expected something ridiculous like 10 million new subscribers to sign up for Disney+ to watch it.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-17 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
So much this. Which I would actually live with, if they had the sense to bring them back and let them live, instead of bringing them back just to kill them more definitively.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-16 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

I don't have an issue with Palpatine having descendants or clones or whatever else you want to give him.

I don't think it makes any sense as a plot twist / character beat for Rey, specifically.

+ whatever number we're up to now

(Anonymous) 2024-09-16 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly this. We had six movies about the powerful Skywalkers so having a trilogy focused around a "nobody" was fresh. TFA set up mystery boxes (because of course it did, it was a JJ Abrams movie) and TLJ opened and answered some of those by firmly saying that anyone can be special and powerful. It doesn't come from a powerful lineage. Then TROS threw that into the fire and reintroduced Palpatine without any explanation other than "somehow he returned." It was lazy.

This. Very much this.
