I can't tell - is this a bad picture of the actor or just another case of someone not knowing what "twink" means?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
English is a descriptive language, not prescriptive. The term has expanded, it is time for you to accept that.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
So what has "twink" expanded to mean now?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This guy, for a start.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
No, clearly that's a leather daddy.

He is a twunk, come on

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Cultural appropriation" is also descriptive, and it's what you're doing right now. Stop it.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, wtf?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The term hasn't expanded, straight people just didn't understand what it meant and now it's been warped past it's original meaning.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That is what expanded means, nonny.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-22 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, straight people didn't understand it, unlike gay people who were born with the knowledge of the correct meaning of "twink" and never misunderstood it, even if they grew up completely isolated from any queer community and only heard it used by straight people.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I was wondering the same myself, only I thought maybe *I* misunderstood what "twink" meant. This just looks a very ordinary dude dressed like an elf.

Very few people IRL actually look like a “twink,” and they all seem quite young. I can understand the term broadening so it’s usable.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
...speaking as a queer dude here, they all should seem quite young because the definition of being a twink includes being a young man or having a very youthful appearance. Twink doesn't really apply to like 99% of people in their thirties, as much as many queer dudes in their thirties might wish it did, and oh boy, lots try. Often embarrassingly.

At least in my circles, people seem to have stopped saying “queen.”

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get what that has to do with the definition of twink, but... good for them if that's what they want to do? Unsure how to respond to this non-sequitur.

That is what a twink is though: a young, usually skinny man, which none of the characters I ever see getting called a 'twink' actually are. The broader populace got ahold of certain types of gay-slang and have been misusing it ever since.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
English means what people using it to mean means. There is no Académie Française for English language usage. Once a word is in the wild, it can be redefined in popular usage as much as we want.

Don't like it? Time to start speaking pure French then.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
They don't know what twink means, it's very clear lots of fandom doesn't even understand the gay-terminology they keep co-opting.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-22 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
It would be funny if it wasn't kind of gross. I bet they think any woman in a blazer is butch.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-22 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
As if most of these people in fandom aren't gay or another type of queer and haven't heard the words being used by older gays. Maybe you oldbies should explain what the words mean instead of just using them and expecting them to understand? Or don't use them outside of your hand-picked circles of gay friends who have passed the Gay Language Test.

the actual definition of a twink as used in the gay community: a young gay man in his early to mid 20s who is thin, pretty, boyish and often appears underage.

fandom's definition of a "twink": any man i think is hot!

sorry, fandom, but i liked when words used to mean things.

Re: +1

We all have different standards of what is considered young, and also what is considered boyish and pretty, is the trouble.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-22 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
He's a twink by elf standards, OK.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-22 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe by dwarf standards.
