Same, I don't care for the undead aspect and tbh I find most vampire characters very samey and overdone. Personally just don't find them interesting, but werewolves or other monsters? Yes please.

In games where you can romance NPCs, I always end up playing only one romance storyline.

Maybe because my PC is a character in their own right so them taking the other path in a non-romance storyline dilemma event where both decisions are equally appealing or repulsive and they metaphorically flipped a coin is easy to see, but a sudden orientation change, or suddenly being cool with good/evil LIs, or suddenly ignoring the first LI to chase the second, is harder to imagine.

Then I think about starting the whole game over with a new PC to see other romances and ugh. Too long. Too repetitive. Too annoying. Guess I'm stuck with the first LI path I take.

For me, he's one of those guys who only looks good with a certain look. He's only hot for me with the long hair of Kylo Ren, just like Benedict Cumberbatch is only hot to me with a beard/gotee. But that is entirely personal taste, it is weird to me that people get offended by someone else's personal attraction.

For some people, art doesn't just mean any creative work. Some definitions of the word refer more narrowly to a certain level of quality. Then of course there are disagreements on what is included. But the word art does have multiple meanings.

Re: Tropes you want more of

I love the arranged marriage trope where the couple starts off as not enemies, per se, but not romantically interested in one another. It's a business arrangement, or a political alliance, that kind of thing. Maybe they even have someone they're in love with, but cannot be with. But over time, the married couple finds out they really like and respect one another, that they're a team, etc. and it leads to a romance.

I think it would have made the later seasons of House at least 10 times better if they had kept Amber around

I'm not entirely sure since it isn't my thing. But I think some people find the whole "animalistic" idea sexy, as in instincts that aren't entirely controllable, animal-like wildness, strength, all that.

Is a simulated version of tic tac toe, art? Is playing a sudoku game in game app, art?

Are sports art?

I feel a little guilty about how quickly I accepted the new names in Ace Attorney Investigations 2.

For discussions that have stopped, I sure do hear a lot of them going on. Are you sure the problem isn't just you, nonny?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure about this one, really. Reminding people that stuff in fiction isn't good IRL has a pretty broad spectrum. Like, someone going "remember kids: serial killers and murder are bad in real life!" is silly because duh, everybody realizes that. But someone going "hey, this relationship in real life would be abusive and coercive, don't idealize this for real" ... can be useful sometimes if e.g. a whole bunch of teenagers are saying they want this IRL and don't realize e.g. this isn't how Actual BDSM works, wtf.

Where do "remember real cops are bad" fall in this? Idk, somewhere in the middle? There's a whole lot of people who realize what you do, OP, and a whole lot of people who don't and are preaching "just a few bad apples" everywhere. I don't think it's always useless to point out something is copaganda when it is, if the context is in a place where people seem to believe its real and reflective of reality. FS isn't one of those places, but they do exist.

OP

To try to be generous: I once read an essay arguing that nothing interactive should be considered art, because art is just taking in what the artist offers. I thought this was stupid, but it was at least creatively stupid.

Ngl I get kind of annoyed when people get all huffy about their unasked for fandom opinions being met by dissent.

If someone is shitting on your fave on a fan forum for your fave, yes, that person disrespecting the intent of the place. But if you tell someone your random thoughts on a character/series/canon in a neutral context, most people go "oh, okay, we're discussing opinions on this thing now" and will tell you theirs. Which may not be positive.

Maybe consider not doing that if you don't want to risk hearing other opinions?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
While your point is technically a good one, I almost never see people offering up those reminders of "what's hot/cool in fiction would be problematic in real-life" to people who are genuinely claiming to want those things IRL. It's only ever uninvited, unsolicited "friendly reminder :)" bullshit on fic or art or other posts that are clearly only referring to the specific in-universe fictional thing.

NAYRT, but this is pretty much a universal problem in fandom, and not just with this. The constant barrage of 'hot button' issues as buzzwords to hammer home some arbitrary shipping war or whatever have watered down a lot of very serious, very real concerns into meaningless, overblown stupidity from ranting antis.

Re: Music You Discovered on Youtube

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to get a lot of good techno, hip-hop, and dubstep recs from cosplay music videos, but people have really slacked off lately. idc about your fave, how about finding some obscure shit that fits your vibe better?

I found Crestfallen, Tobu, and Sim Gretina via cospay vids; the first hasn't put out music in years but Tobu is still making music and while Sim Gretina doesn't, their remixes of both pop music and fandom-based filk are honestly incredible. Their remixes of "Blue" and "Walk the Dinosaur" are beter than the originals.

Tobu at least got me to find NoCopyrightSounds, which has some amazing artists like Lensko. Youtube music is a consant web of rabbit holes, so you can find good shit when you're looking for it. But also follow your favorite artists from other streaming platforms, so they can have a smidge of extra pennies of income. I follow Celldweller, Blue Stahli, Zardonic, Fury Weekend, Dance With the Dead, Two Steps From Hell, Lindsey Sterling, etc, which is a mixed bag of content. Sometimes you find out your favorite band is touring and will be in a city you can reach! (Dance With the Dead) Other times you find out that the artist is a dumbfuck who just posts inane shorts like it's TikTok and they need to shut the fuck up (Lindsey Sterling). You really don't know until you follow.

Might be viewership bias speaking, though. Most of us frequent places where everyone is aware and see tons of the redundant messages. But most of us don't frequent places where people are unaware to see if anyone's saying that there.

I've definitely seen people have The Conversation with floods of newbies "interested in BDSM" after the Fifty Shades craze, for example. So it does happen sometimes.

This is my experience also, and the main reason I'm annoyed with it.

Offended that Happy Death Day is in there, TBH. I love those movies.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-28 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

Other actually useful examples I've seen: "yeah, this is not what military service is like," "this is NOT what actual war is like," "this is not what actual Japan is like, stop it you weebs"

Ofc none of these were cutesy "friendly reminder :)" on tumblr posts. So like context matters.

Under academic definitions. It could be considered low art by some, but generally speaking movies, tv, video games, all not considered art.

It would be like calling all written forms literature.

I didn’t make this pic; I just looked for a collage of bad movies.

To be clear, I don't agree. I find most philosophical definition discussions eye roll worthy and not worth my time, but I have a few friends that love to discuss this stuff. (though not with me lol)

Didn’t Tolkien have some weird thing about how elven souls are different from human souls?

Me too. Even a hopeful dramedy will do, honestly. Those do exist.
