I thought OP was just talking about not linking to RL identities. So my point was just, I've seen tons and tons and tons of drama where no one involved had a link to an RL identity.

If you're saying that people need to be willing to abandon their fandom identities any time they get involved in drama, and use different socks for social media and posting fic and so on, and keep all your identities separate - I think that's an absolutely unreasonable expectation and an unreasonable expectation to ask of people.

If you're in a fandom that's rampant with antis and drama and don't want to deal with them, pseuds/socks for posting fic or whatever are great. If one starts getting raided you can just make another. You don't have to tie everything back to your main account to be a convenient target for those people.

How did you get "you need a separate account for everything and keep 20 separate identities running!" from that?

If antis yell at you because you got popular enough to be noticed, either you get popular again and get yelled at again, or you don’t get popular again and no one reads the fic you spent all that time working on.

And you're sure that will happen with 100% probability to everyone even though it doesn't, so they shouldn't even consider the anon/new account option, and it's important to you to convince people to not even try it even if they don't mind having their fics be separate from their main accounts, because... why?

They'll keep existing whether they're tolerated or not, though. An internet without trolls and assholes has never been a thing. It's not, however, anyone's responsibility or job to bear the brunt of that or fight them if they don't have to, or want to, and can avoid it.

I’ve seen when anti movements get bored and move on. The remaining antis still try to start shit, but no one listens to them anymore and they don’t accomplish anything.

I agree that pseuds can be useful in anti-heavy fandoms if that's what you're saying. But they're not One Neat Trick To Avoid Harassment Forever, and people not using pseuds and socks aggressively enough is not a major causal factor of fandom drama, which is what OP seemed to be talking about.

I was saying it's one neat trick to make one vector of harassment instantly droppable, not one neat trick to Avoid Harassment Forever. I don't think it'd solve all fandoms problems or something, but I can see OP having something of a point in that this sort of thing isn't considered or used much any more, or as much as it used to be. Another anon further below summed up better than I could, how fandom is now very much about maintaining one main personality/identity or presence.

Sorry, but I'm going to use the convenience that being anon gives me to drop out of this conversation at this point. It's really hard to continue a conversation when everything I say is immediately hyperbolized.

To be honest, I've been confused by your comments from the start because your comments have seemed unrelated to the actual secret.

The secret is about how people link their real-life identities to their fandom identities, and this causes drama. "Fandom's modern issues could be solved if people didn't feel entitled to tying everything they do and create to their RL selves." That's the secret. I don't agree with it, because I don't think that linking fandom IDs to RL IDs is a major cause of fandom drama - people get into tons and tons and tons of drama with just pseudonyms, with no RL IDs involved. So getting rid of RL IDs wouldn't solve anything.

That's what I was saying. I don't know how you read the secret. But then you made a comment about how you can just ditch a sock and roll another if you get harassed. So one, I was confused about how that related to my comment and the secret in the first place. And two, I also don't think that what you're suggesting solves that many issues either, because people enjoy and get benefit from having persistent fandom pseudonyms to build relationships with people.

And then every post since then I've had no idea what's going on.

DA wading in here, I think I see where the confusion lies; there's an assumption being made by OP and the AYRT that people's 'main account' IS tied to their RL identity which is not always true for everyone but IS true in a huge number of cases esp. with younger fans and for-profit fanwork creators. For example a heck of a lot of people's Tumblr or Twitter or other online identity ISN'T separate from 'themselves' any more. At least that's how it makes sense to me.

SA er so to be clear here, you're reading 'people tying their RL ID to their account is causing drama' and they're reading 'people can avoid lots of drama by not tying their controversial fandom fic or opinions to their RL self (which IS their main account)'.

Especially people who make money off of fandom. If they abandon a name and start over again, they have to convince people all over again that they’re worth buying from. I don’t really like the idea of capitalism in fandom, but it’s not something I can judge as immoral or anything, and if you need the money, you need the money.
