People are probably going to argue at you about being or feeling shamed or whatever but I kinda agree. I don't think it's shameful to like stepsister porn or whatever extremely popular genre there is, but I'm not going to hit the like button to post it to my Twitter account to inform my friends and family. I'm not ashamed of posting here but it's comfortable to be anon and be able to leave conversations when you want without people able to follow you around.

Idk. The easiest way to deal with controversy is to avoid it. Nobody needs to know what you're into in fandom besides the people who are into the same thing(s). Not being a "Proud [Whatever] Fan" doesn't mean you're ashamed. Privacy is nice.

I can definitely agree with this secret. Fandom used to be more about focusing on fandom, now it feels like fandom is an extension of your entire social media/internet identity. We attach a lot of unnecessary social pressures/policing to something that should be fun and turn it into this weird rat race.

I was heavily into online fandom culture for the majority of the 2000s. Somewhere in the early 2010s, I took a step back from actively being in fandom online.
I created a FB account to keep in touch with fandom friends when a comm I was in began to die out.
I can say roughly the time my relationship with "being online"/social media changed was when people I knew IRL who had nothing to do with any of my fandom related activities began to friend request me on FB.

Outside of watching a lot of YT videos and reading fanfics, I wasn't very active in fandom culture in the 2010s.

When I found a couple fandoms that sparked fandom participation interest in the 2020s, I recall feeling really weirded out by fandom culture.
I eventually came to feel like fandom culture felt like people were more concerned with selling a personality than actively interacting with fellow fans and just enjoying each other's company based upon some common interests.

I often felt like everyone was busy sizing each other up to see if the person they spoke with was in a higher or lower position than them and depending on how they assessed how to rank the other person they either kept things at a casual distant friendliness or they sucked up to other person.

It brought me back to social hierarchies in school and family cousin/friend circles when I was a youth and it really yucked fandom to me.

I'm back to mostly quietly consuming videos on YT and reading fanfics as the bulk of my fandom participation.
My IRL social medias are basically dead. Never on Instagram, Twitter or FB and I'm fine with that.

As a fandom old, I kinda feel where this is coming from. Esp. the 'everyone was at most a username' part. It makes me a little nervous sometimes when I see people out there tossing around real names, ages, locations, daily life stuff, and various identity labels without a care. It also has become harder to interact with people as 'at most, a username' because people in general expect more info from you now. People have also taken to judging 'you, the IRL person' for 'things in the fic you write or the fandoms you're in' way more than before, and the former mutual assumption that everyone understands fiction-is-not-reality is doubted more and more.

Are separate accounts the answer? I don't know. But the veil of separation has thinned for sure.

I miss the part where you felt like you could actually make friends°. Fandom's way too big and despite there being more people, you have less chance of connecting with anyone in a meaningful way. Maybe I'm just shaking my fist at clouds, but I don't feel the current state of fandom is an improvement in any way.

°And I'm sure someone is going to come along and snark "skill issue" and while there's some truth to that in my case, it doesn't diminish my point.

While I do think fandom works better pseudonymous and I don't like the trend toward trying to tie fandom identities to RL identities, at the same time, I would say 90% of the drama I have experienced in fandom in recent years involved entirely people using usernames that were in no way connected to a RL identity. The drama all occurred on Tumblr where basically no one I know connects their Tumblr account to their RL identity.

Not saying that going back to usernames wouldn't solve a lot of problems in fandom, but in my experience, it would solve basically none of the problems I've personally experienced in fandom. But maybe this is just a function of the platforms I'm on. I'm sure TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube are different from Tumblr, Twitter, and Reddit, for example.

Not exactly the same. But we have an active author in a smallish fandom that can be considered BNF. I see them in discussion all the time etc. Their fics are absolute piles of unreadable shit. I had to mute them on AO3 because I was always clicking on them in hope that THIS TIME it's going to be decent. Nope. Really badly written.

Before I even read the secret, I thought "woah! four boobs!" Also something about the placement of the armor/her pose had me think for a moment she had four arms (mostly because of the right side). Overall a trippy and not great outfit.

What games do you play? If you play Archero, I’d love talk about pretty much every aspect of the game. The discord is hot garbage and it’s been ages since I connected with anyone on the subreddit. Luckily I’m in a clan of mostly level headed gamers but we do have an eager young whale who has been taking over our chat. It’s put a lot of our players off and it’s frustrating. I’m only vice leader so can’t boot him but fingers crossed the leader finally caves and gets rid of the guy.
