I think the loss of communities as organized spaces, at least in most popular fandom social media platforms now, has a lot to do with the shift.

Now most places operate on "tags" and "feeds" that everybody can post anything they want to, and lots are competing to post the best thing that stands out the most, and like 90% of it is someone's random spam opinions or shower thoughts as opposed to fanwork or meta.

We've swapped from having peer-organized clubhouse systems to having a big open field system where everyone's individually yelling whatever they want into the air.
