Yeah. See this issue i see with the old once popular Asylum AU is that from a disabled/mentally ill/Neurodivergent perspective, asylums were HORRIBLE places rife with abuse against very vulnerable people and the thought of writing them as anything less feels like historical revisionism in a way or like idealizing something harmful. Thats the issue that i see and agree with.

I prefer to opt for a researched Mental Hospital AU with more modern, professional and nuanced understanding of mental health and mental illness.

Yeah, the obvious pitfall is people going 'ha ha looney asylum' and writing it like it's a comedy and being totally ignorant of how inaccurate that is. But it doesn't seem like you're doing that.

Ugh i hate that so fking much. When I was in special ed that was how the students treated us like they could provoke and manipulate us for personal entertainment. I often ended up having to defend my classmates from it.

Its why i hate the whole 'lolcow' thing of Kiwifarms and such because its just basically "haha lets poke the weird autistic person/kid/whatever with sticks and watch them get upset.

They forget we're people.
