Re: Fanfic Writing ?s thread

So . Um. Question I wanted to ask. Urm. Would a "Mental Health Institution AU" be considered the same kind of idk problematic as people would consider an "Asylum AU". I'm neurodivergent with mental illnesses so I understand the potential issues that come with an Asylum AU. But I'm kinda still afraid of being blasted and getting hate and accusations of being ableist and stuff and i don't wanna be misunderstood. I have personal experience with being on the receiving end of some pretty vicious ableism so hurting others or appearing to be ableist is the last thing I want to do

I'm also kind of nervous that I may be already fucked because I'm writing/planning a Hazbin Mental hospital AU. And yeaaaaah. That fandom already has a bunch of people who hate it enough to jump on any excuse....

I don't personally think that is intrinsically ableist. Completely depends on how it's done?

Yeah. See this issue i see with the old once popular Asylum AU is that from a disabled/mentally ill/Neurodivergent perspective, asylums were HORRIBLE places rife with abuse against very vulnerable people and the thought of writing them as anything less feels like historical revisionism in a way or like idealizing something harmful. Thats the issue that i see and agree with.

I prefer to opt for a researched Mental Hospital AU with more modern, professional and nuanced understanding of mental health and mental illness.

Yeah, the obvious pitfall is people going 'ha ha looney asylum' and writing it like it's a comedy and being totally ignorant of how inaccurate that is. But it doesn't seem like you're doing that.

Ugh i hate that so fking much. When I was in special ed that was how the students treated us like they could provoke and manipulate us for personal entertainment. I often ended up having to defend my classmates from it.

Its why i hate the whole 'lolcow' thing of Kiwifarms and such because its just basically "haha lets poke the weird autistic person/kid/whatever with sticks and watch them get upset.

They forget we're people.

I don't find it offensive, as someone who's been in one for a few months before. The issue with asylum AUs is that they're normally making light of the abusive conditions of asylums for an aesthetic, or cheap angst. I do even sometimes enjoy that type of setting if it's not handled totally badly... It depends how you go about your institution AU of course, it could very well come off as ableist if you approach it in an insensitive way (glamorizing psych abuse like doctor/patient shipping shown in a positive light, unsympathetic portrayal of mentally ill people, using the setting just for funsies would all rub me the wrong way personally...) but psychiatric care is part of life for many people, stories about it aren't some taboo subject. I had really interesting and emotionally intense experiences when institutionalized, good and bad, it's a cool setting for fic.

You might get hate regardless because it's a sensitive subject and you can't please everyone. IMO, it's fine. Your AU sounds intriguing to me, while watching Hazbin my wife and I kept joking that the hotel was their rehab center / psych ward / day program hahaha.

So yeah, idk what your own experiences with institutionalization are but do some research on others' good/bad experiences (especially if you haven't been through it, but even if you have I would recommend it, cause it's likely different characters would have different previous psychiatric histories and feelings about it) take some time to be careful with how you write mental illnesses outside of your own, and go ahead. Sounds like a neat fic idea!

Thanks a bunch.

Ill do the research and try my best to do it justice. <3

Like i said above I'm neurodivergent and have lots of personal experience with ableism making me want to avoid being ableist.

My plan is to show the humanity of patients and such. The idea of it resonated bc i felt like it was a good way to translate the themes of the show to Earth.

Sounds good to me! It sounds like you're coming at it from a respectful place, and I totally see why the AU makes sense for the show. Good luck with your fic!
