I don't find it offensive, as someone who's been in one for a few months before. The issue with asylum AUs is that they're normally making light of the abusive conditions of asylums for an aesthetic, or cheap angst. I do even sometimes enjoy that type of setting if it's not handled totally badly... It depends how you go about your institution AU of course, it could very well come off as ableist if you approach it in an insensitive way (glamorizing psych abuse like doctor/patient shipping shown in a positive light, unsympathetic portrayal of mentally ill people, using the setting just for funsies would all rub me the wrong way personally...) but psychiatric care is part of life for many people, stories about it aren't some taboo subject. I had really interesting and emotionally intense experiences when institutionalized, good and bad, it's a cool setting for fic.

You might get hate regardless because it's a sensitive subject and you can't please everyone. IMO, it's fine. Your AU sounds intriguing to me, while watching Hazbin my wife and I kept joking that the hotel was their rehab center / psych ward / day program hahaha.

So yeah, idk what your own experiences with institutionalization are but do some research on others' good/bad experiences (especially if you haven't been through it, but even if you have I would recommend it, cause it's likely different characters would have different previous psychiatric histories and feelings about it) take some time to be careful with how you write mental illnesses outside of your own, and go ahead. Sounds like a neat fic idea!

Thanks a bunch.

Ill do the research and try my best to do it justice. <3

Like i said above I'm neurodivergent and have lots of personal experience with ableism making me want to avoid being ableist.

My plan is to show the humanity of patients and such. The idea of it resonated bc i felt like it was a good way to translate the themes of the show to Earth.

ayrt

Sounds good to me! It sounds like you're coming at it from a respectful place, and I totally see why the AU makes sense for the show. Good luck with your fic!
