It's almost like there are widely shared experiences among a group based on the most common reaction that is mostly specific to said group, while there's also no absolutes when it comes to the human mind. Weird that.

Also, it was robot for me, because I grew up watching Small Wonder.

It is unfortunately very normal for people in any group to think that anyone in that group who didn't do X is lying about being part of that group.

Vulcan for me. Then, any human-like robot/android, so Data.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-01 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
oooh, Robot to me too! Still is, But because of growing up watching Transformers and Metabots, so I prefer the slight humanoid but not human looking ones, mecha likes.

Cat for me, until Super Mario World came out, and then it was a Yoshi.

Now that I'm older and more aware of how Yoshis are generally used by players in the game (as opposed to how I used them, which was to take them around a course and feed them all the enemies), I'm back on the side of cat.

Adjacent, but Xena. I wanted to be Xena. Yeah, she's a human, but still, Xena.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-30 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I wanted to be Gabrielle, which I think is kind of hilarious. Though honestly I would still not mind that.

This type of "all X people did this" stuff is always bullshit. You could replace "neurodivergent" with a lot of words and still get a large population that pretended/believed/desired to be aliens or something.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-30 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
People also forget that "neurodivergent" means a lot of things. I'm neurodivergent but not autistic or ADHD (though there is some overlap with ADHD).

Hell, I think literally everyone I know did this when they were kids and I know for a fact that most of them are not neurodivergent. It's a completely normal kid thing to do.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-01 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
This. Really weird how people are acting like kids pretending to be something/something else is something only ND people do, but honestly? ND do this a lot - take a fairly common trait or behavior and try to claim it as an ND thing.

When they say 'neurodivergent' they really mean 'special', 'not a boring normie', or even 'not a poo-person' (heh).

(Anonymous) 2024-09-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Reminds me of the more than just one popular post about solidarity for queer kids who related to villains and didn't connect with heroes growing up. Uh, I'm queer and almost always related to one of the heroes, if I related to anyone? Villains were boring! Their only personality trait was "evil"! Is that supposed to be the queer experience? Those posts were so alienating, I didn't even not relate to villains because I thought I was too good of a person, I barely thought about them at all. I guess maybe it's different now but kids stuff didn't have nuanced villains when I was young. They weren't like anyone I knew, queer or not.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-01 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I guess they feel like that because the villains are sometimes outcasts, or whatever? Like Joker and Loki, IDK. Like, they became villains because of how they were treated and the queer people who identify feel like they're treated poorly?

I don't really get that either.

I'm confused, is a person who is stating they are not neurodivergent going like "so, neurodivergent people, about this thing I'm confidently sure you all did, which was it for you?"

What?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-30 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed the tags are from a reblog by someone who related to the post for other reasons? Idk.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-30 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Neurodivergent here and yeah I did this, you not doing so doesn’t mean you aren’t also neurodivergent OP, just that your experiences differ from others because we all do. I have ADHD but I don’t do every little thing the same as others with it because mine manifests in some ways that are specific to my lived experiences and personality. Neurodivergent habits are more broad strokes than exact checklists, sure some things will be similar and match up, but we will also differ.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-30 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously this doesn't apply to all ND people (and plenty of NT people daydreamed about similar things) but it's common enough that I get why memes about it are a thing. The tone in the OP post is kind of irritating but I think it's just meme-y hyperbole and not trying to say that this is truly a universal ND experience. Memes like that aren't really my thing because they feel condescending even when they aren't intended that way. I get why other people like them. I can get why it would feel weird to see if you don't relate at all.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-01 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I hate these "all neurodivergent people do this/only neurodivergent people do this" type posts. Neurodivergent people aren't a monolith. Plus, there isn't one single symptom that differentiates all neurodivergent people from all neurotypical people because if there was, diagnosis would be a lot quicker and easier.

Sailor Scout or Power Ranger for me.

People sometimes make jokey posts about experiences that are common within a group that they are a part of. Not everyone in that group will relate to every one of those posts. That's because while there are tendencies, there is also a lot of variation between individual people. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the original post, unless it's overstating the universality of the experiences it discusses, which I don't really feel like this post is.
Anyway, my personal complaint about it would be the "early childhood" bit like I'm not still mad I can't shapeshift.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-01 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I hate "every X is _" posts. I know they are jokey but when you struggle with your identity or finding a place in your community it's so damn alienating

(Anonymous) 2024-10-01 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm also neurodivergent and never did this, but I never acknowledged myself in my imagination/pretend play in general. I made up stories with characters all the time but I was never in them in any form, I was just the "writer".

(Anonymous) 2024-10-03 02:16 am (UTC)(link)

I'm of an age where everyone played ET in the school yard, because playing out bits of movies was part of how we processed them. I don't think the overlap is anything so clear cut as ND means playing non-human or vice versa.

But maybe I'm missing something.
