Re: Sentinel AUs

They do share a lot of tropes! Sentinel verse stuff was not focused so much on sex and anatomy though. And a lot of it was all about control, which I feel like omegaverse is all about not having control. It is an interesting comparison though! It also shares a lot with soulbond tropes - sentinels and guides being mystical matches meant for each other etc.

Yep, I can see what you mean about those being big differences! Plus the similarities to soulbond AUs. I wonder why Sentinel AUs declined in popularity, perhaps the connection to a fandom that eventually quieted down (The Sentinel show that the idea for the AU came from) limited the reach somewhat? Perhaps also fandom in general's shifting trends and interests in certain tropes, given that Sentinel is a bit different from other AUs that are currently common. Sentinel fic seems to have trailed off in the late 2000s while soulbond fic got a big boost in popularity around 2012, and omegaverse originates from around 2010, right? So maybe the tropes in both/either were similar enough to draw in most fans who liked Sentinel AUs or biological D/s or other "biological hierarchy themed" AUs (generalization, idk what exactly to call these though of course there are subversions and non-hierarchy focused examples), though some fans continued preferring specific AU tropes? Idk, just curious and wondering. Thanks for getting me thinking on this and curious to look into fic I wouldn't have known otherwise.
