I'm turning 40 next year and I want to celebrate it by going somewhere I've never been.

I'm tossing up between a safari in Africa or going to Japan.

On one hand, I've wanted to go to Japan since grade 5. On the other, it's too expensive, and a safari would be a once in a lifetime experience.

If you can afford it, I'd say Japan. Both would be awesome. But if you had the opportunity to do something you'd wished for and didn't, you'd probably end up regretting it.

My vote’s for Japan ‘cause I went there this year and absolutely loved it, but a safari also sounds amazing.

I think safari would be better for 40 and Japan for 45 or 50. Just because a safari seems like it would be harder the older you get. But I’ve never done either so I only mention it as something to maybe look into.
