Do you live where you grew up?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-20 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I have moved around a bunch as an adult, I think 5 states and multiple towns within, and currently live pretty far from where I grew up. I thought nothing of it until a recent conversation with someone who was taken aback and said they don't know anyone that has done that. All their friends and family are from the area and all grew up relatively close to the city we are in. Got me thinking!

Nope. I got out as soon as I could. You couldn't pay me to move back. My wife is the same.

You could pay me to move back, but it would have to be a substantial amount. Like never work a day in your life or your kids life type of amount!

The area I grew up in is very pretty, but that is about all it has going for it.

The area I grew up in isn't even pretty. It's flat as fuck, has the most horrible weather, and the people suck. The only thing it has going for it is that it's cheap to live there, probably because of the aforementioned problems.

I'm over 1000 miles away from where I grew up. Given that my childhood neighborhood got hit by a hurricane-spunoff tornado, this may have been for the best.

I moved every couple years as a child. A bit less frequently as an adult but still always moving. I’ve lived in three countries and 14 states (some twice). I literally can’t imagine living my whole life in one place. Most of my social circle have also moved multiple times as adults and some as children, too.

I do now.

My teenage years and early adulthood were spent several provinces away, but...I'm back, now. (Moved back 4 years ago, now.)

Always moving! Been back near where I grew up a couple times, but briefly. Of my group of six friends growing up, one has gone back our hometown after living away, one has always lived in the next town over, one lives in the big city a ferry away, one up north in the province, and me, across the country. My closest family members don't live there anymore, either, so even if I wanted to go back, it would not be for that. I like moving all the time, though.

Nope. I grew up in North Carolina and now live in Colorado.

Im so glad. I mean I miss some small things but overall its a huge improvement. Especially in what I get paid when i have a job.

no.
this reminds me of when I had to explain to an old lady acquaintance that I wasn't going "home" for Thanksgiving, I was going to visit my parents who didn't live in the same place they lived when I was a kid and therefore it was their home but not mine. I don't think she had the slightest idea what I meant.

Yeah I refer to it as "my parents house" but not home. People get weird ablut that sometimes.

I can’t remember how it came up but basically my mother learned that I described their house and their house and not my home. I tried to explain but she was adamant that wherever they lived was my home by default, just like it was with her and her parents. She was born in and grew up in the same house where my grandparents literally died. Grandpa in the bathroom and grandma in the bedroom (about 20 years apart). My parents house held no memories or warmth for me, it was just a house where they lived and had no trace of family life or anything.

When my parents sold the house my siblings and I spent so many years in, the new owners told us we could come back for a visit if we wanted, I thought to myself 'never again'.

No. I moved to the big city to go to college and never went back. Now I live in the country since we’re both wfh people. Also, my parents have passed and their home was sold, so yeah, I really can’t go back.

We moved 27 years ago from my childhood home and I haven't moved out. Someone has to take care of my parents and in this economy I couldn't afford to live in my own.

Nope. I didn't even grow up in one place. First 4 years in Braintree, Massachusetts, next 4 and a bit in Ipswitch, MA. Moved to the Philippines, lived in 3 different places there from 9 to 19.

As an adult I've lived in 2 countries (US, Croatia) and 3 different states (Georgia, Massachusetts, Texas). And within those states I've lived a bunch of cities as well.

Honestly, home is where family is for me. Home has never been a specific place.

Nope, I live in a small country and grew up next to its capital, which made going to uni, finding a job, having access to lots of stuff, etc. easy. My close family also lives in the same area. I don't live in the same town where I grew up but I live like 10km away. I want to move now though so I can retire in a nicer place, as climate changes.

Yes. I always meant to leave and move to a big city, but now my small town’s a big city and it’s way cheaper to live here than the neighboring ones. Most of my friends and family still live here too, but I have two friends that moved away.

Yes. I am from a from a big city everyone usually move to here. Some people move to smaller places because rent/traffic/people but I feel trapped in small towns

Same state but different city.

Re: Do you live where you grew up?

Yes, I live in the same town I grew up in. It has had it's ups and downs, but that has had more to do with my untreated mental problems then the town itself, and I'm glad that I have stayed here. I'm close with my mom who also stil lives here, and I made more friends in my 20s as I began working and met new people. All that I want now is a job that is not retail.

Yep. Born and raised in the same city, and never really felt the desire to move. That said, it's a big, liberal city...if I was from some small town surrounded by right wingers, I would've moved.
