Crime question

You can remove any crime from society, but only if you first commit it against a random, possibly innocent, person.

What are you removing?

If you remove theft for example, does that mean that a starving child can no longer steal a loaf of bread to eat to survive?

Animal abuse. Because having those things done on one human would be totally worth it to make sure no animals were ever abused again.

I had a friend that used to like to ask edgy type of questions like this. Like "you can cure Insert Painful Deadly Incurable Disease but you have to murder your parents to do it, what do you do?" and I never really got the point of it. Like, it's just an unnecessarily emotionally painful thought exercise. But then we talked about it a bit and he didn't get that it actually genuinely upset me, like it would plummet my mood and bother me for awhile, because he didn't work like that. He genuinely thought they were fun thought experiments. We lost touch over the years just because that's how life goes, but I always think of him fondly when these type of threads come up.

Failure to maintain visible buoys on lobster traps.

I'm getting rid of a hazard to small boat navigation, and also having a tasty lobster dinner. And the RNLI will be rescuing someone in a small boat offshore who got their prop tangled in a lobster trap line, but they like that sort of shout apparently.

The easiest/simplest with no real downside is probably fraud. Easy enough to grab a friend and promise them $1 if they invest 1c then never pay them back.

If that removes all fraud from the world, including by shady megacorps and politicans and governments who are now either obliged to follow through with promises they make or unable to make promises they don't intend to follow through on, sounds like a good trade.

Realistically, it would depend on my ability to do harm to a random person. As great as getting rid of murder would be, I don't think I'd be capable of doing it, so stuff like that is out.

I think I could hit a random person once to get rid of all assault. I could try to make it up to the random person so they won't involve the police (apologising, pay some damages, etc.) and even if they do, the crime isn't that severe as to end with jail time or worse. And the victim can't retaliate with violence either, since all assault is now gone.

If I yell "hey baby, shake that ass!" at a passing rando, does that mean no more sexual harassment, or just no more catcalling?

I'd do it either way and then just be super apologetic, like "omg I'm so sorry I thought you were my cousin and we do this to each other all the time as a joke," etc etc, but no more sexual harassment is a way bigger win than no catcalling.

I'd only steal from a random person (swipe a pen or their spare change or whatever) if it meant stuff like wage and identity theft and human trafficking (theft of people and theft of the proceeds of their labor) were also wiped out. I've never been in a place in my life where I needed to steal to eat, but I wouldn't want to deprive people who would go hungry otherwise.

It would have to be one of the crimes that doesn't actually hurt anyone. I could never hurt someone intentionally like that. I like the idea you mentioned below of littering. All the other laws I can think of that don't involve anyone being hurt I don't actually think are bad things so I wouldn't feel the need to get rid of.

Maybe tax evasion. If me not paying the 87 dollars I owe meant that the ultra-rich that avoid it had to pay their share, I think I could live with the guilt.

Noise ordinances might be one the easiest, though.

Perjury might be an interesting one - if I'm caught after, you can tell exactly why I did it.

I have really been enjoying r/bookshelf. It is just pictures people share of their bookshelves. Straightforward but I love seeing all the variety of books and bookshelves.

So, I love all the cat ones for obvious reasons. And a few of the meme ones (a couple Tolkien ones, history memes, mythology memes, a couple Star Wars ones). Idiots in cars is fun.

Mostly ones for specific hobbies and fandoms (which probably seems weird to do fandom stuff on Reddit, but unlike Tumblr/Twitter, the format makes it so you can have actual discussions about things).

Other than that, my favorites are ididnthaveeggs and SapphoAndHerFriend / AchillesAndHisPal (these two are basically the same thing and have a lot of overlap, but I always visit them both).

Do you live where you grew up?

I have moved around a bunch as an adult, I think 5 states and multiple towns within, and currently live pretty far from where I grew up. I thought nothing of it until a recent conversation with someone who was taken aback and said they don't know anyone that has done that. All their friends and family are from the area and all grew up relatively close to the city we are in. Got me thinking!

I'm over 1000 miles away from where I grew up. Given that my childhood neighborhood got hit by a hurricane-spunoff tornado, this may have been for the best.

I moved every couple years as a child. A bit less frequently as an adult but still always moving. I’ve lived in three countries and 14 states (some twice). I literally can’t imagine living my whole life in one place. Most of my social circle have also moved multiple times as adults and some as children, too.
