The modern equivalent to MSN is Discord (which I like despite it's issues), but I hate how that's often the only way. There's no forum to meet people -> "home base" of an LJ or something to get to know and individual better -> IMing for private or group conversations. It's all either completely public on one site or completely private on a certain app/program.

Yeah I've not really tried Discord yet myself, perhaps I should, but this definitely fits with my overall feeling. It still doesn't feel quite "right" though for some reason, possibly my personal issues/preferences. There's just no middle space anymore is there? Even with tagging and stuff you can get people barging in deliberately trying to stink up the place (police your fun) whereas forums required some effort if you had to sign up and create topics rather than just ranting in everyone's mentions.

Good experiences on Discord are a matter of luck, I found my current friend groups through trial-and-error over 5 years, but if people you know or follow have a public server it's a good way to jump in. And I feel you about people stinking up the place, my blog is mostly fandom but I don't have it searchable or post in any of the main tags because people are so aggressive to strangers. Tags on Twitter and Tumblr is more of a museum, but forums and LJ comms felt more like an open dialogue.
