But you are pulling the same action driving in the road, it's just a matter if you are doing it when leaving or arriving, so I don't really see how it's preferable. Maybe I'm picturing a different scenario than you.

Backing into traffic is dangerous because blind spots exist and because you're depending on oncoming traffic to notice what you're doing and stop for you. Backing into an empty parking spot mildly inconveniences the people behind you who have to wait a few extra seconds for you to do it, but is only dangerous if there's, like, a small child on a tricycle in the spot you're backing into.

Unfortunately, sometimes nearby hedges, walls, and other view-obstructing objects mean that if you back out onto the street from a driveway, you cannot see the oncoming traffic (and it can't see you) until you're actually part way into the street. If you back into that kind of drive, you may hold up traffic for a bit, but you have a full view of traffic and it have a full view of you.
