What was the popular trope when you got into fandom?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it still around or popular?

Thinking back I honestly can't think of anything. I probably joined at a time when there wasn't any trending trope.

There was the standard uke/seme and top/bottom stuff but that had existed before then and continues to exist and likely forever will so I can't really call that a fad as much as a staple.

Genderswap was a big one I remember being popular. I don't see it much anymore. I see trans fic and "always the other gender AU" but not magical hand wavey temporary genderswap as the plot.

Other than that, just general wump.

It's not when I first got into fandom, but I remember the first really big BDSM AU and seeing it send waves out and inspire others and spread across Fandom as a whole. It has really changed a lot since the first ideas.

Smarm, whump, Sentinel AUs

Alas, only whump remains and the Sentinel AUs mostly warped into ABO, which is not my jam.

I'm really sad that it seems so many different tropes all morphed into a/b/o, which is also not my jam.

Mpreg fanart, and lemon/lime fits.

Ooo, and really specific tagging for who was top and who was bottom in a pair.

Oh god, the top/bottom wars. I hadn't thought of that in years.

I don't remember what was popular when I got into fandom, but the oldest one that I remember best was the Canadian shack.

Hmm....

Well for one, among teenagers like me there were these huge crossovers on ffnet (in the misc section) where a bunch of characters from cartoons cartoons were cast in roles in a Disney or animated movie plot with OCs here and there. Some of them could be really fun actually. Though we did get flamed and picked on by older writers for this EVEN THOUGH most of our stuff to my knowledge was tucked away in a certain section of ffnet. Idk if this could work on ao3 unless they had a system with a more easily exclude-able tag rather than listing all the fandoms which could be annoying to exclude. A shame it was really fun back then

Alsooo there were grimdark AUs. Which could be ok or REALLY BAD.

There were OC fics with "OC as the protag's twin going on adventures with them". Again those could be really fun or really annoying and bad

Then there were the "my BETTER godmod Mary Sue OC comes in to a fanfic to kill /get rid of the evil Mary Sue OCs invading" metafics known as Suehunters or OC hunters (i thik) which were just embarrassingly cringe to everyone except the writer and a few devoted friends.

Man the 2000s fandom was wild.

When I got into my main fandom, the most popular trope around my fav. character was that she was secretly anorexic. Thankfully, that trope has died down a LOT. It was a terrible trope.

I'm curious about which character that was.

I'm not sure about fandom in general. But in one of my specific ships (Melkor/Sauron), when I first got into it, abusive versions of this ship were really popular based off one specific fic. And it always felt a little off to me, even from the beginning. But as I delved more into the fandom and figured out my take on the characters, I came to despise that interpretation.

I remember a lot of Prison!AUs. Never got the appeal, myself, but people really seemed to love them.

I think it was "girl takes off glasses and puts on a dress = suddenly beautiful" or some nonsense like that.

One Bed at the Inn

It doesn’t completely saturate fandoms as often these days but definitely still alive and kicking. That’s good for me because I absolutely love it lol

I haven't been there in ages, but the Sanders Sides fandom use to be rife with Soulmate AUs.

...and the adventure continues

When fics were basically continuations of the series [fandom Quantum Leap, PG version] with writers trying to tell the same sort of stories we could no longer get from TV. Of course nowadays QL is dead, but worse than that, ever writer seems to think that fanfic is only for shipping and rarely writes anything for any fandom without a shipping scene levered into it. You don't have to ship to do fandom [blahblahblahdisclaimeryoudon'thavetonotshipeitherblahblahblahweirdodefensivenerdsinterjecthere].

I also miss when fantasy novels were all about the true and noble king returning, and the orphan living in poverty under the heel of the evil usurper turns out to be the prince who has to adventure with a band of happy friends at least one of which was an elf.

Angst such as "Male character with canon female love interest is actually with her because he's suffering from internalized homophobia, other male character saves him." Though the fics I read didn't tend to villainize the female character, they'd usually make her sad but supportive (I Want My Beloved To Be Happy) when she found out.

None of that is popular anymore. Homophobia doesn't exist in fics and if they don't want to just entirely handwaved female love interests, they solve it by saying they were never actually a couple, they were just mlm/wlw besties who got mistaken for one, or realized they were both gay as soon as they'd been together a while.

The one I remember was "I'm not gay!... except for you."

Fics were usually set up for maximum whumpage by having society turn against the "straight" character, while the established gay character was powerful enough to protect them. Seto/Joey fic was my first introduction, I think it was part of Harry/Draco for a while? Either way, it was usually between rivals.

It's not that common any more, and I kind of miss it.

Sex pollen which was the preferred shortcut to porn before Omegaverse became totaly dominant. (lol.)

Also saw a lot of High School AUs, which I still see sometimes but not as often.

This is old but I think enemies to lovers, sometimes with (forced) cooperation in some place they're trapped in or whatever (including getting the fuck away from hellish place to start over), body swap, hurt/comfort, bdsm, meeting again years later.

Harry Potter AUs. (I don't miss these much, all my favs are +17 now)

His Dark Materials/Daemon AUs. (I miss these very much. So many cute critters aren't getting hyperlinked into fic these days.)

Absolutely wild AUs in general. I feel like things settled down into coffee shop/florist or mob boss or school AUs when it's the Flower/Bumblebee AUs that'll stick with me.
