Me too, me too. :(

Yeah, I hear you. I'm not really a big shipper, so most fanfic that focuses on romance and shipping isn't really my cup of tea. That's... most fanfic, period. Meanwhile, I'd love to read fic that's basically another serving of the canon. If the media is fantasy, I'd like read more about the characters and the universe. If the media is detective/mystery, I'd like to read about another case/mystery. Etc.

I like gen just as much as I like shippy fic.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-22 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
same. i just like well written fic.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-22 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish there was more quality gen fic. A lot of the ones I've found in my fandoms are just not good. I wonder about that kind of correlation. But even in the published world it is hard to find books that are gen.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-22 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite kind of fic is one where ships are hinted at and subtext is all over the place but the focus is on the gen plot, whether it's adventure or suspense or drama or comedy. Slow burn into a ship is fine too as long as people getting together isn't the focus of the overall story.

The issue with ship fics is in 99.9% of them the ship IS the plot and that's boring to me.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-22 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Thiiiiiiis. I don't mind romance, but I don't want it to be the main focus and I don't want the ship to BE the plot.

So much same! 100%

Gen is all I want to read after losing interest in shipping. But alas, there's not much for my faves besides what I make :(

(Anonymous) 2024-10-22 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
god, same. I just am not into shipping anymore for some reason but there's no gen in my fandoms, only smut.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-22 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could love gen fic, but my brain won't let me. It's gotten to the point where I can't even get through a case!fic, even if my OTP is there and just not the focus.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-22 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I have zero interest in gen because gen is what I get from the canon itself. I want fic to explore all of the stuff that canon DIDN'T give us, which is almost always shippy stuff.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-23 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I get that. I like gen that explores plots and hanging threads from canon.

I mean... sure, but there's plenty of non-shippy stuff that canon won't give you, too. Sometimes people want prequels, sequels, missing scenes, unresolved plots to be resolved, side characters explored, etc. etc.

I've been a mostly genfic writer for many years and I have to say that the popularity of genfic is highly fandom-dependent. Some fandoms are very gen-friendly and have a ton of world-building and character fics, some fandoms completely ignore anything that isn't shipping.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-23 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
Shaking hands as another nearly only gen writer. Though I have never been in a fandom where gen was bigger and generally have always been the only gen writer. In my newest fandom, 99% of genfics are already by me. It's a weird position to be in, but I've arranged myself and I genuinely kinda like my 20 hits and 2 kudos average (and very very rarely even a comment). It feels comfortable.

Newbie to all this. Is genfic usually fluff fic or just fic minus sex?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-23 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Fic minus focus on romance

(Anonymous) 2024-10-23 06:24 am (UTC)(link)

Welcome to fandom! Gen fic is fic where there are no romantic relationships or they aren't the focus of the story, unlike het or slash fics. Het and slash fics don't necessarily have sexual content in them although a lot do. Fluff is something else entirely. fanlore is good site to learn fandom jargon if that's something you want to do.

Genfic is fanfiction with a plot beyond 'but what if they were banging?'. Revolutionary and hard to imagine, I know.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-23 06:37 am (UTC)(link)

I always choose shippy fics because I'm sure the charas I"m interested in will the focus of the fic and it's easier to search for. I would love gen fics where my ships only exist in the background and the fic isn't about their relationship. There are very few fics like these in my fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-23 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Same!

As someone who in the last 10 years wrote 753 fics, 715 of them (95%) gen fics, I hear you. But also, I'm kinda okay with people not reading it when they don't like it? Cause I would never want people to read something they don't like. Would I want people to like gen fic more because I think my 715 fics that have about 20 hits and 2 kudos each are just as great if not greater than my less than 40 fics that get over 200 hits and less than 4 fics that get over 1000 hits? Yeah, sure, but honestly, I'm good down here as a no name fan with my one person who always leaves kudos (cause they kudos everything in the fandom) and the other person who mostly leaves kudos (cause there's a specific character they really like and they read everything about that character). Sure, it's not as much engagement as when you write shipfic, especially when you write long, explicit shipfic prominently featuring a juggernaut, but it's something.

Also, funny enough, I have found that my shipfic that featured very rare pairs as the only ship tends to get the same or less engagement as gen fic featuring a popular character. It's kinda funny to me because for years I've only written gen and was of the opinion 'you add a ship, you get engagement' but that's not actually always true.

Anyways, I'm also kind of hypocritical here because while I do read the genfic in my fandom (of which there is very very little other than mine, but still), I do like a good shipfic too and when given the choice would probably prefer it so long as all my favorite characters also feature prominently and the ship is not the sole focus (which is the easiest way to lose me), so...

i do like fandoms with more procedural canon for this, because the level of genfic is truly higher than other fandoms.
