Ooh, that's unfortunate. I've had a random person request to do podfic of my stuff and honestly, I never got back to them because I didn't want to straight up deny them but I also wasn't enthusiastic about it because of experiences like yours.

SO MANY people can't read, on many levels. I mean, their reading comprehension is poor, they don't grasp plot or characterization and miss even not-very-nuanced nuances. And then so many people can't read, as in they're bad at reading/narrating aloud and their poor interpretation is likely to lead to weird choices when it comes to doing character voices, etc.

Yeah, I hear you. I'm not really a big shipper, so most fanfic that focuses on romance and shipping isn't really my cup of tea. That's... most fanfic, period. Meanwhile, I'd love to read fic that's basically another serving of the canon. If the media is fantasy, I'd like read more about the characters and the universe. If the media is detective/mystery, I'd like to read about another case/mystery. Etc.

My deep dark fandom secret I've held onto for years: I cannot stand Zachary Quinto. I feel bad because it's not him as a person, I just cannot stand his face or voice or the way he speaks. So while this show looks good and I've heard good things, it's a hard pass for me.

I do hope the fandom picks up for your sake though! Just because I don't like it doesn't mean I don't want the show to be successful for those that do enjoy it.

Ohhhh that is awkward.

I always wonder about stuff like this. I've seen so many authors share "this absolutely amazing artwork" people made for them and 9 times out of 10 it is so so bad. But what do you do if someone makes fanart for you? You certainly can't be like "I'm sorry, I don't want to share this because it is awful."

I wish there was more quality gen fic. A lot of the ones I've found in my fandoms are just not good. I wonder about that kind of correlation. But even in the published world it is hard to find books that are gen.

Yeah, some people make choices for an audio format that tells me they don't actually listen to audio formats. There's one fic that is absolutely amazing and when I saw it had a podfic of it I was so excited - only to find that they took the same lyric from a rock song and played it at Every. Single. Scene. Break. Three paragraph intro - "a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year..." - five paragraph scene - "a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year..." - ten paragraph scene - "a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year..." etc etc etc. It was unlistenable...

I gave it a try for Zachary. I watched the first four eps. But the whole 'and then yes, this person survives, but their life is incredibly messed up and here are the workarounds the doctor helps figure out so they can cope' ... well, I found that incredibly depressing. And the bride getting dragged off to be prosecuted though I assume will be found not guilty for medical reasons but in the meantime, all the stress and havoc that will cause her life... I gave up! The endings are just too miserable. Do another secret if it starts having happier endings, I might give it another try.

My favorite kind of fic is one where ships are hinted at and subtext is all over the place but the focus is on the gen plot, whether it's adventure or suspense or drama or comedy. Slow burn into a ship is fine too as long as people getting together isn't the focus of the overall story.

The issue with ship fics is in 99.9% of them the ship IS the plot and that's boring to me.
