Agreed. Every movie is the same old sexist claptrap.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-28 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind this kind of stuff as pulp fiction. People act like its high cinema though.

At its best, it's very well made pulp fiction. I, personally, have a deep and abiding love for pulp fiction. Therefore, I like James Bond. Not complicated.

Read a romance novel, you get what you expect. Read a Tom Clancy novel, you get what you expect. Watch a Bond movie... watch a shounen anime...

Do all these have problematic aspects? Sure. They're known and part of the genre they're in though. I'd settle for people being aware of that vs. eliminating them entirely.

Yes, they have problematic aspects, but so does everything else in the world, including all the things the morality wankers deem "pure" and "wholesome."

And if they don't have them by today's standards, they probably will in a decade or two!

It's fun, brainless entertainment, like Marvel or Hallmark movies.

Just because it's not *your* type of fun, doesn't make it worthless.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-28 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
idk i don't think marvel or hallmark are quite as purposely misogynistic and sexist as these. bit of a difference there.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-28 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon from above

Yup, they're basically the equivalent of Hallmark movies with 10x the budget. Formulaic and you get what you expect every time. I don't care for either of those but also don't care if people make/enjoy them. If someone thinks one of them is the greatest and most meaningful movie ever, well, glad they enjoyed it, our tastes aren't compatible lol

Exactly. I'm not looking for high art here, just stupid spy stuff and action sequences.

I can't get over my nostalgia with the Bond films because it's one of many things where I'd watch them with my dad (usually on a weekend afternoon, though obviously the Dalton films didn't feature there.) I know they're not great when it comes to certain themes but yeah... action films (along with science fiction/fantasy films and various sports) are how I spent time away from my mum and sister with my dad.

I wasn't keen on the books though when I finally attempted those.

Oh yeah, there's stuff in the books that aged like milk (the Amos 'n' Andy-sounding dialogue for most of the black characters in Live and Let Die comes to mind). Not that the movies don't have their share of badly-aging bits as well but most of them aren't as bad as the novels.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-29 12:03 am (UTC)(link)

Agreed. Like many franchises, they could have made it better. They didn't.

I agree. Weirdly, though, I'm sometimes okay with sexism in media, or at least can look past it. But the spy genre just isn't my thing anyway, so I'm not willing to excuse it in these movies. Plus the character is really irritating.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-29 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is that way.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-29 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
It’s ok for things to exist even if you don’t like them.

I really don't have very strong feelings about Bond films (though I invariably love the title song!) but I would like to see a new spy franchise that isn't cheesy humor or super dark or a massive team of people like MI. Just bright, clean taking down baddies and a foe country that's a dictatorship or overall shitty. Russia is fine as the antagonist nation now that it's shitty again. Leave the middle east out; too volatile.

Just like one spy or maybe a duo, with several films! And neat gadgets. I didn't mind the Bourne series. Something like that. I wish Salt had become a series, because I thought Angelina Jolie was pretty decent in it.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-29 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I would also absolutely love to see this!

US is the shitty one. Too bad it rules over UK now, so Bond messing with its weapons corruption is too unrealistic.

If you're interested in a group of young folks discussing what's wrong (and sometimes what's right) about the Bond movies (and later, other action franchises), I really recommend the podcast "Kill James Bond". They rate each episode using a fun scale they call SCUM - Smarm, Cultural Insensitivity, Unprovoked Violence, and Misogyny. It's like golf, the better it is, the lower the score.

I also really recommend the live episodes where they did the Charlie's Angels movies, those are pretty funny too.
