I swear I look over my fic like 5million times with a fine tooth-comb and STILL when I reread it a couple of days later after publication I find an annoying typo somewhere :( So for me it's very much unintended but I feel better if someone thinks it's a game!

Out of curiosity, how do you feel about people commenting politely to let you know about a typo?

I'll probably feel embarrassed (because I'm just awkward like that) but as long as the comment isn't rude and is more like "FYI I got your meaning but I think this is a typo" then I'm relieved. YMMV of course!

ayrt - yeah I personally like it because I get more embarrassed thinking it is left out there for more to see (weird anxiety thing) but I have seen so many people say they get upset by it so I never comment when I see typos/errors.

So much fandom stuff is walking that fine line where you know that it rankles some more than others. I'm the same, I don't tend to point out typos even though I personally would welcome it because I've seen drama caused over it in the past :/

If it's literally "heads up: there's a typo in chapter 5, breathe should be breath" I'm pretty sure most authors would be like "oh thanks" and fix it.

If anyone is like super offended by that the problem definitely isn't you.

Eh, unless they’ve asked not to have that sort of thing pointed out to them, it’s probably fine if they just posted Chapter 5. A DM would be less awkward than a comment pointing out the typo to the entire world, but whatever. If the fic’s old, then it’s considered rude by most people to point out random typos unless the author has indicated that they’re into that sort of thing. It’s the difference between telling someone that they’re wearing mismatched shoes when they’re heading out to the party and telling them when they’re on their way home.

I think of it more like telling someone their fly is down or they have a sock static stuck to their back while they are on the way to the party.

But the people who get upset about it take it very seriosly and get way upset ime and are usually sensitive to a lot of types of comments so I just avoid commenting alltogether. Solves the problem!

Not the person you asked, of course, but for me, the one comment I got that only pointed out a typo without engaging with the fic at all otherwise was pretty disappointing. It was during a time when I barely ever got any comments and I was so happy to get one only for it to just say "hey, you misspelled this word". Like, yeah, I always find typos in my writing later because apparently that's just what it is, but please, if you wanna point them out, also engage with the fic at least? Like, I probably would still feel a little pang of embarassment but if someone gave me a nice comment engaging with the fic and then tacked on 'oh, and you also had a typo here', I would be a little weirded out, but it would be alright I think.
