The first question stands but they're not making weird things up. It really varies from fandom to fandom but some fics are full of ramblings about the author's personal lives, apologies for bad endings, late chapters, akwards scenes, you name it -- sometimes long apologies for unfinished fics which were left there even when the fic has long been completed -- and it's not two lines it's several long paragraphs. Some even put these as summaries. Authors can do whatever they want but OP isn't speaking of things that never or rarely happen either tbh.

Maybe they're in fandoms that skew younger? Because I never see author's notes like that these days.

DA I think age does play a role in it but it isn’t only in fandoms that skew younger. I used to see it all the time in GOT, Buffy, and X Men specifically in ships that skewed older. I haven’t read any fic in a long while though so no idea if it’s still a trend in those ships or not. I do know they all still get new fic though.
