This has happened so much with comics that I think it's now swinging around to (in some cases) campy fun again - also it helps that they've got the movies and TV shows to drop the serious stuff! But then there's Tom King getting his grubby hands on everything.

I have seen this exact argument made in the Stargate franchise so much and I DID love the campy silliness of SG:1 when I was younger. But when I grew up, Stargate ... didn't? and I felt like Atlantis was never for me. But then by the time SGU came out, after literal decades of campy silliness and the heat death of the universe thrown in for flavor, I was suddenly all for the new gritty weirdness instead. I have never seen Battlestar Galactica and I hated DS9 in Trek but I LOVED SGU. It was so DIFFERENT than the rest of the series but that actually felt like a breath of fresh air! There was danger, there was pathos, there was HATRED between characters. It just felt wild and taboo for a Stargate property. I know it's popular to hate my favorite show but I love it because it came after all the weird silliness, not because the weird silliness was BAD because it WASN'T but because this made it unique within the franchise? IDK.

there were a few where the competitor had a rough cook and made legit mistakes, so those I understand, but the ones where the competitor fucking nailed it and the edits of the judges praising it end up fooling you when bobby wins it's like...fuck you and everyone involved. you know Bobby's dish had flaws and still chose it...

huh I guess that's why I stopped watching it. you're right OP and you should say it.

Hard same! In my headcanon, Chakotay either dies in a shuttle crash he caused or he gets chopped up by an alien lumberjack who mistook him for an ambulatory tree. And Janeway, Seven and Raffi lived happily ever after.

That's really sweet OP. I hope your friendship continues to grow and you and your reviewer friend are supporting and showing up for each other.

One of my closest friends in the world is a fandom friend I made when we were both like 19/20. In a fandom neither of us are in anymore. We've never met and even if we never do, I hope this to be a lifelong friendship. Longtime penpals isn't as uncommon as people might think.

I think the American critics will be more mixed about it because they will lack both the emotional attachment and understanding of the background necessary to appreciate it. But I doubt any of them would describe it the way you have because none of that applies.
