HIII You'll never see this because I'm writing this weeks after the fact but you are RIGHT! I (non brit) took my non brit parents to see it when they were visiting me in London and we all thought it was exactly fine. The "Dear Bill" song is great, and everything else us just lots of clever shouting.

My theory is it's because it affirms everything the english love about englisness - it makes fun of posh men while still being almost entirely about them, it's about how they won the war in a charmingly befuddled way, it's got camp nazis and dumb Americans. ww2 was this country's high water mark and you will never, ever go broke patting them on the back and shouting jolly good show

Having said all that, I think it's amazing that it's been gone from a fringe show to the west end, like I don't begrudge them their success. and I reckon if i'd seen it at fringe, I would have raved and raved about it.
