I'm so scared about the outcome of the US election. I don't know if I can handle another Trump presidency, and I'm not even American but I know it'll ripple effect to my country. Even in the aftermath if Kamala wins I'm worried about his supporters throwing another Jan 6th.

I'm wishing you all a safe and speedy election and biting my nails in the meantime.

I'm worried about that myself. My one comfort is that I believe they are very prepared for such an event.

This. One thing that will help a lot is that Trump is not in power this time, and can't keep the National Guard from stopping any trouble if the Trumpers want to start it.

If the Supreme Court is solidly on his side, ready to lay down the law of the law in his favor, does it matter if he is not in office or not? He's already in power in all but name. Harris orders in Natty Guard, SCOTUS issues an emergency ruling standing them down, same result.

I mean, they can't issue a ruling unless it's in a court case. Rubber stamping stupid Trump bullshit, sure, but even the current kangaroo SCOTUS (probably) won't treat a piece of grease-stained paper with "I do what I want-DT" on it as a case.

I attended a political outdoor event in my neck of the woods today. Mostly women, POC and LGBTQ. It wasn't the biggest event ever but it was good to see folks of all ages, and it seemed everyone there was on the same page about how serious this election was. So that felt encouraging to me as an American.

Frankly, I would be shocked if Trump and his band of merry assholes *didn't* try anything between now and next year. I don't think the Democrats are playing around this time, though. I can't predict or promise what will happen, obviously - I can say I did my part and hope that we as a nation collectively grabbed Donald by the ballot so hard that he will never run again.

I've been so fucking anxious, I can't even drink booze because I'm afraid it'd turn into an addiction if I did so right now. I'm not from the US, but whatever happens out there is going to ripple here.

I've been reading posts from lgbt & trans communities, and I feel hopeless. I want to think that the mail-in ballots will give Kamala the vote, but people are citing the polls favoring the demagogue. Even the most optimistic communities I visit are terrified of another term of his, and can't fully convince themselves that Project 2025 won't come to pass.

I don't trust the polls, only action.

In a messed up way, I'm hoping Americans will remember how sick and scared they're feeling right now. Not in a mean "hope you learn your lesson" way but because I do want it to stick in their heads how important elections are. It's not a one-and-done thing. Regular maintenance helps keep us from ending up in this situation or worse.

And while it doesn't say who they voted for, and some women support Trump, largely I see more women sick of Trump and MAGA shit than anything else.

Me too. I'm on some messageboards for women my age (50s) and we have HAD it.

The occasional Trumpster wanders in and they get an earful, lol.

We're mostly white suburban types, and we're PISSED, so hopefully that scales.

They think Harris/Waltz will be insufficiently genocidal towards Palestinians and Arabs. Evidence does not support that. In fact, if anything, they will be ramping up the Middle Eastern genocide towards non Israeli nations. It is a major bone of contention with the left of the Democrat party, and being as genocidal as they are is probably costing them votes. If anon really wanted to troll or to cost votes on behalf of Trumpernickel, they'd have claimed they were doing too much to protect Israel and being too "Jewish" instead.

Polls are not all that dependable. In 2016, all the polls said Hillary would win, and well, we know what happened. Polls depend heavily on who answers them, and sampling and a whole bunch of statistical things that aren't always done well, or may be slanted to produce a particular result.

Same. Businesses and banks in my town have started boarding up their windows in preparation for the inevitable riots regardless of how the election goes.

I would breathe easy. Harris is gonna walk it, and the Trump supporters will largely lick their wounds and slink off. The whole thing is overblown in the press and by influencers who play it up for the extra engagement. There might be one or two isolated protests and bouts of violence, but they will be isolated. You can rest easy knowing it will be a non event and pass pretty much without incident.

Even in the ultra unlikely event that it goes the other way, which it won't, the same will happen. There will be no massive riots or revolutions, there will be no handmaids tale shit, elections will not be abolished. The exact same shitty states will continue exactly as shitty as they would be under Harris, the non shitty ones will make the same token gestures, and we'll get to do the same dance all over again with the same theatrical lines spouted by some new faces in four years time. It is not going to be the end of history, and it is not going to be what the weird doomers claim. But it doesn't matter, because Trump/Vance has a less than zero chance of winning anyway.

Don't listen to this anon. Complacency is in part what got us into this mess in the first place, and complacency will not get us out of it.

Just because there are people who will fight against it doesn't mean the threat doesn't exist.

Obviously, don't give into despair, but there are deeper problems right now than whether or not a presidency will be won by the non-fascist party (the conservative majority Supreme Court is still a problem, for instance). The presence of a struggle (as opposed to an irreversible defeat) doesn't automatically mean we can "breathe easy."

It isn't complacency it is calmness and confidence. It is about not getting all wound up by escalating hysteria (I do hate that word, but the sense of self imposed panic exacerbated by listening to other people in a self imposed panic and competing to have the worst "worst case" scenario is hard to put into any other word). It is going to be okay. No matter who wins, not much will happen and not much will change. Just the different rhetoric, and rhetoric is all it is going to be. The shit places will continue to be shit, the shittifying places will continue to shittify as per their own super local politics, and the places where life is improving will continue to improve, and both parties will take responsibility for the successes and blame their other for the failures.

Breathe out, it is going to be much the same. Don't get caught up in the escalating rhetoric, don't get caught up in the footballiszation of politics, and don't place so much emphasis on whether "our team" or "their team" wins. They will play the same PoliticsBowl again in four years whoever wins.
