Well, I love it. It's fun, it's exciting, and most of the complaints all boil down to 'it's not EXACTLY like canon' while also saying canon is the LoTR movies.

Which are no more canon than the show lol. Come of it, people. Galadriel is significantly different in all of them and that's okay. They're all different and they're all excellent and that holds true, imo, for both the character and the media the character is in.

I saw an obsessive hater on social media recently saying something like "bet you all won't stay when he becomes an eye" [about Sauron having a bit of a villain fandom following off the back of the show] and it basically summed up my feeling that a lot of them haven't read the books/additional material but use the PJ films as canon because...outwith those films Sauron was never JUST an eye and they're obviously gonna do his armoured form in some way when he loses his fair form in the show.

I have some issues with the show (S1 pacing all over the place, not particularly here for the Gandalf reveal, Numenor S2 plot regularly pissed me off because I don't like most of the characters, few other things I could mention) but for the most part it's alright and I'm having fun.

Sauron was never physically an eye, that was all Jackson. The part that talks about Gollum being tortured for the Ring location mentions Sauron's four-fingered hand from where the Ring was cut off. He was never an eye.

Yeah exactly, but even when you explain he did have a form (seen by Gollum) in the books then suddenly PJ doing that fuckass eye isn't the lorebreaking Tolkien-grave spinning crime they've just screamed at TROP about for not following the text precisely.

I always imagined the "eye" in the way the films do it more like a telescope than his actual form.

Huh. The people I know who dislike it also don't particularly care for the films (or have big issues with the films)! My husband, for example, pretty much only likes "Fellowship;" "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King" depart from the books in ways that really piss him off. Unsurprisingly, he gave "Rings of Power" a shot and hated it.
