I didn't hate it!

Something I've noticed over the past few years is that shows on Prime have more annoying fans (this show) and fans that miss the point (The Boys) than shows on HBO and AMC. Maybe because they're more prestigious television channels? IDK.

Could be performative, yeah, or people latching onto something as an excuse. On the other hand, there could be a group of people that have the same basic complaints - does the reason have to be novel to be true?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The kneejerk recitation of the same lines is what makes it untrue.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it because of blatant Celeborn erasure but sure whatever.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
He's just hiding.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's kind of fun, though, that they've got him in reserve for whenever it would be most impactful. My pet theory is he'll be showing up in season three, now that Galadriel had a chance to face Sauron again and deliberately reject him.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-10 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Just reading they actually played with this shitty pointless ship makes me loathe the show even more.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-11 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
She didn't reject him romantically in season two, she rejected him entirely, the entirety of his being.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I think the people who like it are acting just as performative, if not more.
The arguments of why it's allegedly a great show reads basically all just as "sticking it to the purists/evil bigots who don't like the show" with barely any actual real reasons why they like it apart from "because people I don't like dislike it" and this just makes any praise and any arguments in favour of the show seem, yes, performative and disingenuous.
Especially when they also try really hard to invalidate any criticism by devaluing the character of anyone who doesn't like the instead of bringing up any valid arguments why that criticism is wrong in their eyes.

You forgot to add "nuh-uh, I'm rubber and you're glue" to that post.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe, just maybe it's a valid observation, just as much as you/OP believe the secret to be a valid observation.

Or perhaps it just sucks and your taste is shit, just a thought.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Shouldn/t you be trolling the politics thread?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No I'm not particularly interested in US politics.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-10 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
it really doesn't lol

(Anonymous) 2024-11-10 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, pretty sure it does. Even divorced from as anything Tolkien, it's just not a very good show.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I love it. It's fun, it's exciting, and most of the complaints all boil down to 'it's not EXACTLY like canon' while also saying canon is the LoTR movies.

Which are no more canon than the show lol. Come of it, people. Galadriel is significantly different in all of them and that's okay. They're all different and they're all excellent and that holds true, imo, for both the character and the media the character is in.

I saw an obsessive hater on social media recently saying something like "bet you all won't stay when he becomes an eye" [about Sauron having a bit of a villain fandom following off the back of the show] and it basically summed up my feeling that a lot of them haven't read the books/additional material but use the PJ films as canon because...outwith those films Sauron was never JUST an eye and they're obviously gonna do his armoured form in some way when he loses his fair form in the show.

I have some issues with the show (S1 pacing all over the place, not particularly here for the Gandalf reveal, Numenor S2 plot regularly pissed me off because I don't like most of the characters, few other things I could mention) but for the most part it's alright and I'm having fun.

Sauron was never physically an eye, that was all Jackson. The part that talks about Gollum being tortured for the Ring location mentions Sauron's four-fingered hand from where the Ring was cut off. He was never an eye.

Huh. The people I know who dislike it also don't particularly care for the films (or have big issues with the films)! My husband, for example, pretty much only likes "Fellowship;" "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King" depart from the books in ways that really piss him off. Unsurprisingly, he gave "Rings of Power" a shot and hated it.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I just think whoever did the styling on the elf characters needs to get taken out back and shot. It's an atrocity.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked Elrond and Celebimbo's hair.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Dear God, you're sick.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-10 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I think the problem with the fandom and the audience as a whole comes down to who the show was made for. A lot think it was made for the movie fans and a lot think it was made for Tolkien fans. But it seems like it was kinda made to straddle both camps and not really resonate with either one on a large scale.
