That isn’t catering though. I get not liking it, I get being pissed off when it becomes canon, but it isn’t catering. I’d be more likely to be pissed at myself because this pretty much always happens with media where that ship is obviously going to be canon and I should recognize that when it happens.

I agree with the other comments. You can feel negatively about it (I sure hate when this happens), but it isn't catering if it was the original intent.

Do you expect the writers to know and just go "oh no, the fans of this ship we planned all along sure are obnoxious about picking up on the deliberate chemistry, better sink it!" or something? You sound exhausting. Like 'hype aversion' distilled into a bitter little lemon of a person.

And I say this as somebody who pretty much never likes the main ship.

I think the best lesson is "don't listen to the fans" and sometimes if the creators are taking that seriously, canon is going to coincidentally line up with what a certain group of fans want. Also, sometimes canon genuinely is setting up a pairing! Sometimes.

Are the creators really catering to the annoying, demanding fans if the ship going canon was part of the plans all along?

Thinking of a lot popular ships that went canon, I feel like the fans were enjoying the authorial intent and...doesn't that just mean the author is being clear with their intention?
So that would mean OP runs into that a lot?

Like, for Percy Jackson, Percy and Annabeth dating was IMO the obvious endgoal early on, especially after Sea of Monsters.

Ron and Hermione in Harry Potter seemed really obvious from quite early on in the book series.

Aang and Katara in The Last Airbender seemed really obvious to me since the first season.

Like, for me, these particular ships felt very Pam and Jim in The Office. The audience is asking when will they finally stop this silly "will they, won't they?" game when it's so obvious they will? It's just a matter of when they get together that is where the uncertainty lies.

But a ship like Rey/Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy...
I think this ship can be argued that it was made canon because the creators saw the popularity in the fandom.
My initial reading of the authorial intent from The Force Awakens was that Rey and Finn would be endgame. And then for The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson I think pushed for a possibility of Rey/Kyle Ren but I don't think he was very concerned about whether or not it'd be endgame,just something to tease the fans with and for the next filmmaker to do whatever they wanted.
And JJ Abrams was like "yeah OK we know how loud the Reylos are".
I personally didn't care if Reylo would be endgame. Instead I really wanted PoeFinn to be endgame even though I knew Disney would be too cowardly to give the fans what we wanted there. I wouldn't have minded Finn and Rose to grow closer and fall in love but LOL...look, I just hope Kelly Marie Tran is safe and happy.

And in one of my most recent fandom pairing drama is Carmy/Syd in The Bear.
I personally don't think they will be canon. I do ship them. Even though part of me wants them to be canon, I think overall for the show's messaging, it would be better for them not to get together.

The Buck/Eddie fans in 911 have completely ruined the show for me since last season. They're absolutely rabid. I'm so glad I never got into Supernatural.

I think the reason Goosebumps is more remembered is because of the books and also because it was still airing when millennials were old enough to watch it. Only the very oldest millennials (more like xennials) saw Are You Afraid of the Dark. And that in-between generation aren’t as engaged in performative childhood nostalgia across social media as millennials.

Something I've noticed over the past few years is that shows on Prime have more annoying fans (this show) and fans that miss the point (The Boys) than shows on HBO and AMC. Maybe because they're more prestigious television channels? IDK.
