AO3 frustration

(Anonymous) 2024-11-23 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
(Please do not consider this as an attack on AO3) But AO3 not having overarching/main tag is such a bullshit. Right now I am in a fandom there this is a big problem. We have fics redirected on a barely related tag because they can't have one tag for us due to the fandom being mix of RPF and fiction. 🤦🤦

Tbf I have been in and out in fandoms that get sorted in absolute deranged ways for years.

I don't quite understand what you mean. Are you saying your fandom a mishmash of several sources, and you want there to be one fandom tag that includes all sources?

Yup. I want All Media Types & Related Fandoms type of tag. But since AO3 are getting weird with it in the last couple of years we don't get to have one.
Sorry if I was too vague I am operating on not ideal amounts of sleep ahahaha

What do you mean? A lot of fandoms have a main tag (either All Media Types or & Related Fandoms) and people can tag specific sub-fandoms as well.

They seems to went back with Sherlock

BUT
We are newer small fandom with a bit of a weird canon. And wranglers keep redirecting tags all over the place

Just use the search instead. The tags are fine and are doing exactly what they’re supposed to do.

No they do not!
There is no singular place for one fandom. You can't favorite the tag.
You can't properly exclude/include. You get all the fics for different parts of fandom/canon in one place but with a bigger meta-tag that also includes like 50 other fandoms. Also fandom name returns some other fics that include it's wording. It's a whole fucking mess. And authors are confused af about tagging. So no, they do not work like they supposed to.
I love AO3, I do and I was always happy to wait while newer and smaller fandoms are sorting itself. But we are so not getting sorted here.

Did you reach out to explain the situation to them?

Re: AO3 frustration

(Anonymous) 2024-11-23 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. Actually after their feedback I decided to vent a bit. We are going to continue being redirected into a different tag altogether in the future too

Re: AO3 frustration

(Anonymous) 2024-11-23 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is that you’re mixing ROF into the fandom. Yes the tags do what they’re supposed to do and one of those things is to keep RPF out of the fandom. An “all media types” tag won’t change that because RPF is not part of the fandom.

If you learn how to use the search you can include and exclude to your heart’s content. I know everyone is really used to simple searching thanks to Google but it doesn’t take much time or effort to learn how to draft a real search. And you once you have your search formula, you can just save it in a word doc to paste any time you open AO3.

Or they could build a decent search and tagging system instead. I'm not doing homework in order to get my porn.

You’re too entitled to spend five minutes learning something new so they’re supposed to rebuild AO3 to make it easier on you? HAHAHAHAHHA Fuck off you piece of shit.

Ok, enjoy wattpad.

That's not a comfortable search and usage AT ALL. There is a learning curve and there is... this.
I am starting to agree with anon who wrote about rabid AO3 fans. Or you just trolling and doing disservice to a site.

Oh dear. Remember mild criticism and insinuation of being less than total perfection is a death penalty worthy offense to the AO3 fans. AO3 isn't for fandom, it is a fandom all of its own. A weird and insular one, like Scientology but without the money. Also, it is running a donation drive right now so they want your money.

AO3 has its issues, but it's still a good thing for fandom.
