I've been in fandom for a while, and IME, it didn't always use to be this way. Your fandom didn't define you, your ship didn't define you, and people didn't expect it to. It's not like we were never troubled by the morality police, but it wasn't anywhere near as foaming-at-the-mouth as it's gotten in recent years.

The more mainstream fandom has gotten, the more performative it's gotten as well. I'm guessing that while it's a blessing for many unhappy, isolated people who need escapism it's also an unhealthy crutch for some. When you don't have much else going on in your life that's good, it's easy for your identity to become stuff you consume because that's easy.

I think it's just a habit of mob mentality. Some people have a tendency to rank things and/or fandom can often be tribal, so a lot of fandoms just spiral into cliques and popularity contests.

I think fandom culture going mainstream intensified the high school culture vibes since a lot more teenagers were finding and creating fandoms on forums and social media sites/apps. Also, the fact that stats and numbers are everywhere, people couldn't help but utilize them as rankings like grades you get in class or how many people will go to your house party or vote you for prom royalty or Yearbook "Most Likely" titles.
Humans are also comparative creatures, we can't help but compare things and compare ourselves to others.

I'm not active in fandom because I hadn't ever been good at this "fandom is about where you are on the BNF spectrum" game. I don't know if fandom cliques/in-fighting/tribalism/hierarchies will ever die out, so I just try to tread carefully and find private spaces to squee and ramble in peace.

I'm definitely wary of people who will act like they've never like a problematic piece of media before, or will do all they can to scrub it out and lie about ever liking it.

At least people who admit that they use to be fans of something, but have moved on or have a more mature approach to that media (ie: acknowledging that it isn't perfect and has its problems, while still enjoying said media) - feel more trustworthy by comparison.

Also the whole 'you are what you consume' mentality is just really fucking dumb.

I will give you that it's an immature view, but I don't think it has ever been confined to high school or that fandom is the only place some adults do this. I mean, there has been book burning, book banning, the 'Red Scare', the Hayes Code, etc.

You know what is the saddest thing? Even some proshippers still hold this mentality despite claiming to be bigger and better people.

I might be too old, but so many times it feels like they want to anger/disgust others on purpose, the same way a highschooler will claim that animes are actually mature and drop Elfen Lied as a peak example.

I work with young children and have for 15 years. I 100% believe that no child would be like that without neglect, abuse, or (rarer) some sort of mental disorder.

Can kids be little shits? Yeah sometimes, but not to the degree you seem to be saying.

There are characters like that, and my attitude toward them is to shrug and say that kids grow up. I don't care if anyone hates them, but I cut still-growing-up characters more slack because it's normal for people who were horrid brats in childhood to outgrow it.

I guess maybe some would defend a character like that? But it seems unlikely anyone would bother with the show/movie/book/comic. The thing is, that’s not realistic or entertaining. Kids aren’t really like that. And audiences of any kind of media are there to see progression. That’s the backbone of storytelling. Either a character moves the plot forward, they move forward, or they’re a waste of space and time.

If you're up for watching a movie, I'd recommend The Children's Hour (1961).
The story is about how a child's lie can have major consequences; but it's not a 'and then she learns her lesson' - but goes to show how her lie ruins the lives of her two school teachers, while initially show to be an asshole.

To be fair, Avatar is pretty up-front about the humans being in the wrong for genociding the Na'vi. Granted its messaging is pretty ham-fisted and lacks nuance but I think calling it one of those "humanity fuck yeah" stories is just downright inaccurate.

I’m the exact opposite LOL I’ve never seen myself in anything but I do see some bits of me. The result it that strong depictions of those traits can change how I view myself and influence my behavior. I actually really hate it :/

One of the reasons authors use pen names is because sometimes they want to write about different or more adult topics and they don't exactly fit with the image attached to their real name. Since JKR was mainly associated with all things Harry Potter I guess that is JKR's reason for still using Galbraith.

I'm glad we're at the point where we can now officially and legally go on record and say Israel is committing a genocide. That Bibi is a War Criminal, as well as just a right wing scumbag, and we can remember that one of those who handed down the indictment is a Holocaust survivor who knows exactly what this means.

We can stop crying antisemitism at every criticism of Israel, and start the healing process. As soon as Israel accepts it has gone beyond the pale, of course.
