I have nothing of value to add except that I love Spirited Away and need to rewatch it.

Do you want to people to internalize Grave of the Fireflies???

(Anonymous) 2024-11-25 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a traumatic movie for a lot of people but has an important message, so I don't really see the problem.

I have to ask if you mean the message most people take away from the film ("war is bad and it makes the least among us suffer"), or the one the director intended ("fuck them kids"), or the one the writer intended ("I was horny for my little sister but let her die anyway")

(Anonymous) 2024-11-26 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking in the director's message first lol

I think you may have the causative relationship backwards

So you think people are primed to invent then hate then destroy the greatest evil that is their fellow man, and hollywood is just tapping into that existing drive and simply purifies the evil into absolutes for the screen?

I could see that as the egg part in this chicken and egg problem, but I think we're now at a point where its mutually sustaining.

I dread to think what an Americanized Spirited Away would look like.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-26 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if it stays animated, it might have a fighting chance.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-26 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, that I could get on board with.

Hmm, yes, "The Wind Rises" is a fine example here, about the guy who invented the Mitsubishi planes used in WWII...

No I don't think so. Movies don't quite have the influence on the collective quite like some individuals seem to think. Every person has their own interpretations on what a piece media/art means to them and what they got out of it.

For the movie "Thirteen" I saw a cautionary tale of what harms modern society can do and have done to girlhood as well as a mirror of sorts on the difficulties in navigating female friendships.
A friend felt seen at how difficult it was to grow up in a single parent low income household and surviving teenhood in a rough environment.
A cousin saw it as a cool film that she felt validated by as well as aspirational to try to reach cool girl vibes displayed in the film. The dark gritty stuff was glossed over.

Also, a lot of people in my life tend to brush off films as "wow good film" or "boo bad film" and nothing more.
They won't ponder upon what the message the filmmakers were trying to convey and then apply it in some ways to their own life.
Like, OP, I think you're giving people too much credit and being a bit naive here.
