Yes, it is also similar to a plural "you." But the Doctor is one person, not 15 of them. And personally using their would make me feel like I'm taking about each incarnation as a separate person.

So then you think "their" is either only plural or nonbinary. It's not. It's simply gender-neutral. The Doctor has been a man and a woman, so "their" is completely accurate for referring to the Doctor as one person.

Examples of singular they/their. If you speak english I can guarantee you've seen, heard, and used it this way before you just haven't taken note of it.

"Pat went to the store today, but they left their shopping list at home. I hope they remember all they needed to buy!"

Or

"Alex is wild today, they need to run around and get their wiggles out."
