Yep, and "Midnight" was all about that.

Must say that I don't think that more than two companions works, as it doesn't give enough space for character development to all of them (see Season 19 and Chibnall's first two seasons).

I agree with this. I liked the family dynamic with 11, but it worked because River wasn't there every episode and wasn't truly a companion.

I kinda agree. I re-watched the entire lot (or rather, everything that hasn't been deleted/lost) and it was really eye opening how often a TARDIS team of 3+ gets separated in a lot of Classic Who serials. And that's in the days when the writing wasn't as concerned about emotional beats. But the end result is the same, having smaller groups with their own mini arc reduces the crowded feeling.
