I'm so sick on all these new takes on old stories that turn the villain into the hero and the heroes into the villain. Giving us the villain's backstory and even making them sympathetic, cool. But if you have to demonize the hero in order to do that, you just aren't a very good storyteller.

Is this based on Wicked? Do you think Wicked does this well?

I will say as a fan of Wicked, I actually think that all those other movies tried to do what Wicked did, and didn't get why Wicked works.

I don't love Wicked, but at least I think the musical works. The book less so. But yes, most other versions of this try to copy without actually realizing what made it work. Wicked at least shows its work and does good character work.

I don't like the ones that have to demonize the heroes either. It feels like character bashing in bad fanfic. Its why I didn't like Maleficent.
