(Anonymous) 2024-12-01 02:35 am (UTC)(link)Being anti-harassment is supposed to be part of the requirement for being a proshipper, but some proshippers do harass people. This is true.
Anti is by definition pro-harassment. Antis themselves put that in the definition. If you hate everything antis hate in fiction but don't harass people who like it, you're not an anti. Antis consider harassing people who like "bad" things a moral obligation, and even if you only like the purest of pure anti-approved fiction, they will turn on you and harass you too when they find out you're not going to join their bullying crusade.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-01 04:01 am (UTC)(link)I used to think I was an anti, because I used to have strong triggers around certain subjects in fiction and would avoid people who wrote fanfiction that triggered me. The idea that my triggers were bad to create art about made sense to me on an emotional level, especially since I had some bad experiences in fandom with being sexually harassed when I was younger by people who liked "problematic" fantasies and also wanted to make it a reality. So it was easy for me to make the jump to thinking everyone was that way.
I started to get really weirded out though, seeing how my "fellow antis" seemed to go out of their way to find fics that upset them and to harass the authors. I never had any interest in doing that, why would I read fic that upset me or attack the authors when I could mind my own business? Plus, they would nitpick each other and me over every ship in a way I found anxiety-inducing. My triggers got a lot better when I stopped hanging out with people who obsessed over the type of fics that bothered them, and went back to just focusing on what I liked to write. Being in anti-heavy fandom circles made me more paranoid and more easily upset.
Plus, after giving it some time and avoiding shipping discourse and such, my perspective changed a lot. I no longer assume the worst of people who write what I wouldn't, and I've actually embraced exploring some of my own dark!fic ideas for the catharsis it brings me.
You're right that some pro shippers harass too. For me it's definitely best to avoid any fandom corners where harassment is seen as acceptable, and to focus on curating my fandom experience instead of focusing on what upsets me, whether it's antis or triggering fic these days. Sorry for the long response, your comment got me thinking about this!
