I think this can work as long as you assume the average unnamed character is beaten down, because it’s easier to establish why the heroic named characters aren’t beaten down. I’ve tried reading stories that assume the average unnamed character genuinely fits into a grimdark world, and the heroic named characters feel alien to the setting. Why aren’t they selfish, cowardly backstabbers like everyone else?
