I can count on one hand* the number of games I have actually finished over the 30yrs I have been gaming. I just have always thought of the ones that keep me going until the very end as exceptional.

*possibly a slight exaggeration, but not by much

I've had this issue with a lot of games that have an extensive leveling system, especially several Shin Megami Tensei/Atlus games or games with a lot of optional sidequests. My problem is that I always want to still level up (reach a certain level, get certain skills maxed etc.) or complete some more side missions before the endgame and then I either get bored or burnt out and just... stop playing. And then I think, months later "oh hey, I could finally finish that game" and try to but fail miserably because I forgot half the game mechanics and the endgame content is too hard for someone who forgot the controls lol

Oh, yeah, my partner does this constantly with games and TV shows, though not books. If we're watching something together I have to be Last Episode police!

(Anonymous) 2024-12-03 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
This is me with games, books, and tv shows... with almost anything. I'm also not sure why, especially when I've been enjoying it a lot. It's almost comical when I look at my goodreads progression and almost every book is literally 50%.

I have been trying to make the effort, but also, it's all entertainment anyway, not reason to force it.

I tend to get to a final boss that's supposed to be really hard and either decide I want to super-grind before facing them only to get distracted by a new game or I try to fight the boss and continuously lose so I decide to super-grind and see above happens again. I don't mind difficult games but when they reach frustration level or the level scaling isn't good I'm more likely to drop it. One of the big ones I remember was Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and that last Neverland fight with the fucking awful flight mechanic, I set it aside and never picked it up again.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-03 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I do this too and thought it was just me, but after being around video game fandoms for a while it seems this is weirdly common.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-03 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
I've done this with shows. Took me years to watch the last 3 episodes of The Sopranos. Haven't watched the last episode of Succession yet.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-03 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)

Seems to me you may not want the game to end. I'm having the same issues with some games like TOTK for example because I don't find the ending interesting or satisfying. As cliché as it sounds the journey to get there is the fun part.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-02 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure an actual heroic character could survive in a universe like Warhammer. Best you get is Guilliman, who is still a murderous, xenophobic, warlord. Sorry about it.

I think this can work as long as you assume the average unnamed character is beaten down, because it’s easier to establish why the heroic named characters aren’t beaten down. I’ve tried reading stories that assume the average unnamed character genuinely fits into a grimdark world, and the heroic named characters feel alien to the setting. Why aren’t they selfish, cowardly backstabbers like everyone else?

Dunno if it's "warhammer" levels of dark, but you might like the Overlord series of light novels. (The anime tends to play up some of the dark comedy). A tomb full of evil undead, demons, and so on takes over the world. There are a lot of heroes; they're heroic, they make small changes...they die.

No, I don't think Dick Wolf is responsible for demonizing immigrants and trans people and spreading paranoia on social media.

It's just popular to say because they're shows about cops enjoyed by boomers and not true crime podcasts enjoyed by millennials.

Unfortunately Ja Rule isn't around any more to answer our burning questions about the latest world politics and news, but don't worry, we have a forum of aging nerds who still wank about the existence of furries in 2024 to ask instead. Let's get some really relevant debates going!
